Jessie Mae Hemphill levittshellarchive video #33 Memphis Music Memories 3.37 min. | 4.6363635 avaliação | 757 exibições Jessie Mae Hemphill, the "She-Wolf" performs with Dr. David Evans on guitar and an unidentified drummer. She spent her life mostly between the area around her birthplace of Como, Mississippi and nearby Memphis. She started music as a drummer in a fife-and-drum band led by her grandfather Sid Hemphill, She played guitar and sang for many years but was unknown outside the Memphis/North Mississippi area until recordings were released by Evans' High Water label around 1980. She had played to audiences in many foreign countries, had received WC Handy awards as best traditional female blues artist, and had even appeared on the TV's "Mr. Rogers Show" by the time of this performance at the Overton Park Shell in the late '80s. The historic Memphis amphitheater was fully renovated in 2008 thanks to a generous grant from the Mortimer Levitt Foundation and the renamed Levitt Shell now sponsors 50 free concerts every year devoted to developing community through the performing arts.. + Informações |

Jessie Mae Hemphill - Train, Train 2.90 min. | 0 avaliação | 108 exibições Drawn from field recordings done by Andrea and Hannes Folterbauer in the Deep South in 1991 (one track is from 1981), Giants of Country Blues, Vol. 3 concentrates mostly on a trio of North Mississippi country blues players, Jessie Mae Hemphill, Ranie Burnette, and Junior Kimbrough (Jacob Stuckey is from Bentonia, MS and LV Conerly is from LA), whose rough, modal juke style has become well known in the blues community thanks to the various Fat Possum releases. The chief attraction of the tracks collected here is the complete lack of slickness they demonstrate, giving these traditional blues pieces the kind of immediacy and freshness that is too often lacking in what passes for blues on the contemporary commercial circuit. These are artists whose music is still in service to their local communities, providing entertainment at house parties and juke joints. Highlights include Hemphill's "Train, Train," Roosevelt Holts' update of Tommy Johnson's classic "Big Road Blues," Kimbrough's signature "All Night Long," and Tommy West's shaky but affecting version of "Catfish Blues.". + Informações |
