Jeremiah Clarke - Trumpet Voluntary 3.05 min. | 4.9347825 avaliação | 245776 exibições Jeremiah Clarke (c. 1674 1 December 1707) was an English baroque composer. Thought to have been born in London in 1674, Clarke was a pupil of John Blow at St Paul's Cathedral. He later became organist at the Chapel Royal. "A violent and hopeless passion for a very beautiful lady of a rank superior to his own" caused him to commit suicide by shooting himself. Before shooting himself, he also considered hanging himself and drowning himself. He was succeeded in his post by William Croft. Clarke is now best remembered for a popular piece, the Prince of Denmark's March, commonly called the Trumpet Voluntary. From c. 1878 until the 1940s it was attributed to Henry Purcell. It was published as "Trumpet Voluntary by Henry Purcell" in William Sparkes's "Short Pieces for the Organ", Book VII, No. 1 (London, Ashdown and Parry). This version came to the attention of Sir Henry J. Wood, who made two orchestral transcriptions of it, both of which were recorded. This further cemented in the public's mind the erroneous notion that the original piece was by Purcell. The famous Trumpet Tune in D, also misattributed to Purcell, is actually taken from the semi-opera The Island Princess, a joint musical production of Clarke and Daniel Purcell (Henry Purcell's younger brother), which is probably the reason for the confusion. The Prince of Denmark's March, commonly, though erroneously, known as the Trumpet Voluntary, is a work by Jeremiah Clarke, composed around 1699. Clarke was the first .... + Informações |

Jeremiah Clarke (1674-1707) - Music from The Island Princess" 9.37 min. | 4.6666665 avaliação | 2539 exibições Jeremiah Clarke (1674-1707) - Music from The Island Princess" Our program, Music from Jeremiah Clarkes The Island Princess," features eight selections from this dramatic opera or semi-opera. Semi-operas developed in England between 1673 and 1710 and were performed with singing, speaking and dancing roles. When music was written, it was usually for moments in the play immediately following either love scenes or those concerning the supernatural. Jeremiah Clarke (1674-1707) was an English baroque composer and associate of Henry Purcell. Clarke was a pupil of John Blow at St Pauls Cathedral. In The Island Princess, a group of European voyagers travel to the Spice Islands and are astounded by the alien culture they encounter. The music, written in 1699, contains the first appearance of what has become known to us as the Trumpet Tune of wedding and graduation fame.ArsAntiguaPresents.com, directed by Jerry Fuller, is a series free video web cast programs of music from the Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical eras performed on period instruments.Video production by Phillip W. This selection can be found on "Odes on the Death of Henry Purcell (English Orpheus, Vol 12) Parley of Instruments, on the Hyperion label. Thought to have been born in London around 1674, Clarke was a pupil of John Blow at St Paul's Cathedral. He later became organist at the Chapel Royal. "A violent and hopeless passion for a very beautiful lady of a rank superior to his own" caused him to commit suicide. Before shooting himself, he considered hanging and drowning as options, so to decide his fate, he tossed a coin?however the coin landed in the mud on its side. Instead of consoling himself, he chose the third method of death, and performed the deed in the cathedral churchyard." Suicides were not generally granted burial in consecrated ground, but an exception was made for Clarke, who was buried in the crypt of St Paul's Cathedral (though other sources state he was buried in the unconsecrated section of the cathedral churchyard). Prince of Denmark's March - Jeremiah Clarke 1.97 min. | 4.8095236 avaliação | 20715 exibições The Prince of Denmark's March, commonly but erroneously called the Trumpet Voluntary, is a musical composition written about 1699 by Jeremiah Clarke, the first organist of the then newly rebuilt St Paul's Cathedral. For many years, the piece was attributed incorrectly to his elder, and more widely known, contemporary, Henry Purcell, who was organist of Westminster Abbey. The misattribution emanated from an arrangement for organ published in the 1870s by Dr. William Spark, then town organist of Leeds, England. It was later adopted by Sir Henry Wood in his well known arrangement for trumpet, string orchestra, and organ. The oldest source is a collection of keyboard pieces published in 1700. A contemporary version for wind instruments also survives.[1] According to some[which?] sources, the march was written in honour of George, Prince of Denmark, the consort of the then Princess, later Queen Anne of Great Britain. The march is very popular as wedding music;[2] it was played during the wedding of Lady Diana Spencer and Prince Charles in St Paul's Cathedral. It was broadcast often by the BBC during World War II, especially when programming was directed to occupied Denmark. A brief portion of the tune can be heard at the end of the Chumbawamba song "Tubthumping" and in the fade-out of The Beatles' song "It's All Too Much". It was also one of the seventeen classical pieces used in creating the lead track of the 1981 Hooked on Classics project. This piece is also used on The .... + Informações |

Trumpet Tune by Jeremiah Clarke (1699) 2.32 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 1268 exibições Let's try a little classical music this time. Mistakenly attributed to Henry Purcell for many many years, this stirring tune was actually written in 1699 by Jeremiah Clarke for the semi-opera "The Island Princess" (along with Purcell's younger brother Daniel). It has been given many names over the years, apparently it was originally called "Second Act Tune", however, it is more commonly known today as "Trumpet Tune in D", or "Martial Air", but I have also seen it called "Trumpet Aire & Symphony of Flatt Trumpits". Oddly enough, my favorite recorded version of this tune is by English guitarist Stuart Moffat, from the compilation LP "Buttons & Bows", Volume 2, and originally from his 1986 LP "October Island". In the liner notes, Stuart says he learned it from a 1983 Nigel Pickles LP, which is coincidentally a concertina album(!) called "The Mexborough English Concertina Prize Band." I also quite like John Hong's powerful arrangement for pipe organ, so I incorporated a few bits and pieces from there as well, the rest came from an arrangement I found on the internet somewhere (sorry, the page I copied doesn't have an arranger credit, so thanks, whoever you are). Transcribed here to the key of C and played with as much pomp and circumstance as I could muster on a 30-button Herrington C/G Anglo concertina.. + Informações |
