O seriado de western Bonanza foi exibido na TV americana NBC, de 12 de setembro de 1959 até 16 de janeiro de 1973. Colorido, co-patrocinado pela fábrica de TVs RCA, um dos braços da NBC e também pela Chevrolet. Tornou-se um dos maiores sucessos da TV de todos os tempos e no gênero somente o seriado Gunsmoke o igualou em popularidade e longevidade. Narra a saga do rancheiro Ben Cartwright (Lorne Greene), um homem de propósitos, e de seus filhos, na defesa de seu rancho Ponderosa em Nevada. Além de Greene, outro ator da série que fez bastante sucesso foi Michael Landon (que depois faria o seriado O Homem que veio do céu, (1984-1989).Lorne Greene também apareceria em outras séries, como Battlestar Galactica. O filme piloto foi escrito por David Dortort, também produtor da série. Dortort criaria outras séries e filmes de TV similares como The Restless Gun, The High Chaparral, The Cowboys, ea prequela de Bonanza, chamada Ponderosa.
