Henry Fillmore (3 December 1881 - 7 December 1956) was an American musician, composer, and publisher. "The President's Own" United States Marine Band conducted by Colonel Timothy W. Foley. A prolific composer, Fillmore wrote over 250 tunes and arranged orchestrations for hundreds more; he also published a great number of tunes under various pseudonyms. While best known for march music and screamers, he also wrote waltzes, foxtrots, hymns, novelty numbers, overtures and waltzes. James Henry Fillmore Jr. was born in Cincinnati, Ohio as the eldest of 5 children. In his youth he mastered piano, guitar, violin, and flute -- as well as the slide trombone, which at first he played in secret, as his conservative religious father believed it an uncouth and sinful instrument. Fillmore was also a singer for his church choir as a boy. He began composing at 18, with his first published march "Higham", named after a line of brass instruments. Fillmore entered the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music in 1901. After this he traveled around the United States as a circus bandmaster with his wife, an exotic dancer named Mabel May Jones. "Men of Ohio March" by Henry Fillmore (1881-1956) Manatee High School Ensemble James Bruce, Conductor James Henery Fillmore, Jr. was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1881. Considered one of the most Flamboyant bandsman of his time, he probably write, arranged and edited more band music than any other composer/bandmaster in his history, including composing 250 original works and arranging over 750 others. The eldest of 5 children, he learned to sing, play piano, fute, violin, guitar and trombone with amazing ease. He studied trombone at the cincinnati conservatory of music and worked for his fathers publishing firm until 1905. He married Mabel May Jones, an exotic sow dancer and both found employment with the lemon brothers circus. From 1921-1926, fillmore conducted the syrian temple shrine band and in 1927 he organized his own professional band, an organization that was among the last in a long line of great professional bands that provided the American public with a combination of music and entertainment. Henry Fillmore himself was a great entertainer, the last minstrelmen. In 1938, he moved to Miami, Florida to retire after being diagnosed with a heart ailment. He assisted the university of Miami band and helped john henry of deland, florida start 32 high school music programs in the central and northwestearn section of Florida. Fillmore (1917) INTRO.: A song which expresses faith in our Redeemer who died, is risen again, and makes intercession for us is "I Know That My Redeemer Lives" (#479 in Hymns for Worship Revised, and #248 in Sacred Selections for the Church). The text was written and the tune (Confidence) was composed both by Frederick Augustus Fillmore (1856-1925). The son of Augustus Damon Fillmore, a hymnwriter and hymnbook compiler among Christian Churches and Churches of Christ of the middle 1800s, he and his brother, James Henry Fillmore, carried on their father's work after he died by founding the Fillmore Brothers Music House in Cincinnati, OH. This song was copyrighted in 1917 and first published in Fillmore's book The Wonderful Story in Song. Many older books say, "Arranged by Fred A. Fillmore." The hymn seems to be a free adaptation of Charles Wesley's twenty-three stanza hymn of 1742 "Rejoicing in Hope" which begins, "I know that my Redeemer lives" (the same hymn which was apparently the basis for Jessie H. Brown Pounds's "I Know That My Redeemer Liveth"). Evidently the copyright passed to the Gospel Advocate Co. of Nashville, TN, in 1931 and was renewed by them in 1944.
