THE MINIVER STORY (1950) is a sequel to the smash hit MRS MINIVER (1942). Reportedly, Edward was first considered for the role of Toby, but didn't want to do it. James, then still called by his real name, William (which he later changed, because there was another actor with the same name), proved to be such a scene-stealer that Walter Pidgeon is said to have joked, "There go my notices!" James was then given the leading role in a great little Ealing film, THE MAGNET (1950). I don't think he did much, or anything at all, after that (some of his credits on IMDB seem to be for the other William Fox), until the TV play THE DOOR (1962). This brought him to the attention of Dirk Bogarde, who suggested him for THE SERVANT (1963), which made him a star. Edward did not give acting another thought until many years later, after army service and a job in a department store. In contrast to James, he had to work his way up, with repertory theater and bit parts in films. His role in the TV play OLIVE (1970) lead to his breakthrough in THE GO-BETWEEN (1970).
