Johnson's Island Prison Camp was set up in 1862, and during it's three years of operation, over 15000 men passed through it's gates. It had the lowest escape rate of all the prisons, being on an island in Ohio's Sandusky Bay on Lake Erie--a long way from the war and from home--within a few miles of the Canadian border. The camp was plagued by the harsh northern Ohio winters, and the sub-zero temperatures and gale force winds howling across the lake from Canada were almost unbearable to these men from the South. After the war, the camp was abandoned, and most of the dozens of buildings were dismantled by locals to use as building materials for farmhouses, barns, and homes across the bay in Sandusky. Eventually the camp disappeared and was forgotten, until in 1910, the Daughters of the Confederacy helped to restore the cemetery and dedicated a monument to the over 250 officers and soldiers buried there. The statue of the Confederate soldier does not look to the South. since that would indicate a position of retreat.
