Jack McGann was a highly influential singer and guitarist who lived for many years in Philadelphia, where he founded the Cherry Tree Folk Music Cooperative, performed as a solo guitarist and leader of Jack McGann And The Swing Band, and taught hundreds of guitar students. He was also an in-demand sideman who played backup guitar for Steve Goodman, Rosalie Sorrels, Paul Siebel, and others. Subsequently, he lived in Atlanta and Houston, where he studied and taught Tai Chi Chuan while continuing his musical career. In 1988 Jack was diagnosed with AIDS and was subsequently involved in a landmark court case regarding the denial of health insurance to AIDS patients. He died of the disease in 1991, but is still remembered fondly in Philly, Atlanta, and Houston, not only for his musical abilities, but for his unique ability to foster a sense of community among musicians, and others. I love this little tune! I learned it years ago when I took a couple lessons from the late, great Jack McGann when he was in Philly. I took the basics from him and then added my own, with a bit of inspiration from TE! I always thought this was a pretty peppy kid's song, given that the last couple lines say "it stopped short, never to go again, when the old man died".
