On March 22-24, 2011 a [series of] video clip/s was created by a national team of experienced Deaf persons, clergy, pastoral workers, and liturgical interpreters for reference and practice while preparing to interpret the new translation of the Roman Missal into American Sign Language for the Catholic Deaf Community. It is important to note that this is a working draft model and focuses on the Common parts of the Mass. In addition to serving as a training tool for Sign Language Interpreters, this project will also be a valuable resource for Deaf Adult Formation classes, Small Group discussion groups, and Religious Education classes for the Deaf, and more. Nowadays the vast majority of conference interpreters follow university training programs to acquire the skills needed in the profession, learning how to improve their memory and concentration capacity, how to take and properly use notes for consecutive interpreting and finally to master the art of simultaneous interpreting. Way back in the early days of the profession, most interpreters, from Nuremberg on, learned by trial and error, from necessity and invention and by simply 'doing it'. Since then, training methods and formats have been developed by universities preparing future interpreters for a career, and also by employers -- ideally, by the two constituencies in tandem -- to pave the way for future generations of language staff. As times change, so do professional realities and environments, so training methods need to adapt accordingly. Conference interpreters and public service interpreters have an uphill struggle to establish quality standards, recognition of their professional status and a consensus on training to achieve the quality standards demanded by our profession.
