Segments of video from the inspection of the Spallation Neutron Source Target 3 performed on August 16, 2011. Probe was inserted into the bulk mercury supply and return passages to acquire images of the cavitation-induced damage to the target vessel inner surface at the beam entrance region (target "nose"). Video shows a crack along the entire inner window surface that is surrounded by cavitation-induced erosion damage, including significant material loss and deformation at the center of the proton beam. Also shown is a damage pattern found on the target vessel inner surface near the side of the target body, in an area that is outside of the proton beam during operation. Note: The vertical straight groove seen 0:19 to 0:39 is a non-welded joint of the inner to outer window, whose gap has grown from an as-manufactured clearance fit. The brownish colored lines above and below the erosion damage areas are the "high water mark" of the residual mercury that remains in the target after draining. After the target is removed from operation it is stored in a vertical orientation inside a storage container, with front of the target (nose) pointed downward. The residual mercury that remains in the target after draining pools in the front of the target and causes discoloration of the inner surface at the air interface of the mercury and target.. + Informações

The wife made some great meat sauce, I cooked up the noodles and we had a hot lunch right on sight. Weapons fired this day: Ruger Mark III with Millit red dot; Bersa Thunder 380; Herritage .22 single action; KelTec P11 9mm; KelTec SU-16C .223. The .223 fired at the 3/16" steel plate PENETRATED the steel, upon close inspection it looked clean like a drill bit made the hole. Easy fix, Ill just weld the holes back up. Of all the rounds shot, 90% were .22 long rifle and 80% of that was with the Ruger Mark III, which ends up being a wonderful shooter!
