++ Discussion on PangeaDay.org ++ Directed by Zach Niles and Banker White (USA) The remarkable story of a group of six Sierra Leonean musicians who come together to form a band while living in a West African refugee camp. First-time filmmakers Zach Niles and Banker White started SodaSoap Productions in 2002 in support of their the documentary film 'Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars' (2006). "SodaSoap" comes from the title of an All Stars song that encourages people to take pride in what they can produce on their own. It has become a guiding artistic theme for the duo, who are recipients of a 2008 Creative Capital Foundation Grant for "We Own TV," a collaborative media project that promotes self-expression through visual media by bringing filmmaking education and equipment to Sierra Leonean youth. Project participants will collaboratively create and produce their own independent media which will be distributed via "We Own TV's" broadcast and online partners. Zach and Banker also continue to work closely with their friends "Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars" who, since the release of the film have become international stars and strident advocates for refugee rights. In times of war, culture and humanity often take a backseat to the killings and devastation that take place; yet Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars demonstrate that even in the midst of destruction, art can subsist and even thrive. Friday, beginning at 5 pm, the All Stars will play a free concert on the Green, kicking off "eMotion," Dartmouth's Summer Arts Festival sponsored by the Leslie Center for the Humanities. The All Stars found each other in refugee camps in Guinea, West Africa, after a brutal and horrific civil war displaced the musicians and ravaged their native Sierra Leone from 1991 to 2002. The members had been involved in the Sierra Leone music scene before the outbreak of the war, when they began performing as a means of distracting other refugees from their suffering and the difficult conditions of the camps, according to Alhaji Jeffrey Kamara, who goes by the name of Black Nature and is the youngest member of the group. "Whenever we started playing, you would see hundreds of people would come around. And most of those people have something in them, which is thinking of what has happened to them," Black Nature said. "But when we started playing, you would see them all come, jump, dance, feel happy, laugh and do jokes even though when they go back, they're going to think about it." Sierra Leone's Refugee All-Stars performed among a long line-up of music greats at the 5th Annual Langerado Music Festival. The festival took place at the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation in Florida. Langerado took place March 6-9, 2008. Sierra Leone's Refugee All-Stars performed in the early evening on the Everglades Stage on Friday, March 7.
