Two Truman High School students remain in custody in connection with an alleged murder-for-hire plot. Joseph R. Garcia, 17, and Jacob A. Jett, 18, were charged with second-degree attempted murder and armed criminal action. They had their first court appearance Wednesday. Police said the pair tried to hire hit men to kill Jett's parents. The Jackson County prosecutor said Jett wanted his parents dead because he wanted to inherit their money. Jett also thought his parents were too strict, the prosecutor said. Jett's mother described her son as a very good child who has never done anything like this before. She said the plot, "came out of nowhere." Garcia is accused of introducing Jett to one of the would-be hit men. Police said Garcia and Jett gave two men $260, one of the parent's ATM cards and guns from Jett's father's collection. The alleged plot unraveled when one of the hired men was picked up for a parole violation. He then told police about the scheme, officers said. The killings never happened but it's still the talk of Truman High School, KMBC's Jere Gish reported. "It surprised a bunch of people today at school," one student said. "I didn't think anything like this would happen here but I guess it did." "(Garcia) didn't say much or anything. No one really talked to him or anything that much," another student said.
