Matthews was recruited by Ashley Hutchings as a male vocalist for Fairport Convention, where he duetted first with Judy Dyble, and then more famously with Sandy Denny. In 1969, as Fairport drew increasingly from a British traditional folk repertoire, Matthews found out he had not been invited to a recording session and, after a short discussion with Ashley Hutchings, departed toward a musical direction of his own.[2] With Thompson, Simon Nicol, and Hutchings from Fairport Convention, guitarist Mark Griffiths, drummer Gerry Conway (of Fotheringay; later to join first the Cat Stevens, backing band, Jethro Tull and then Fairport Convention from the 1990s on) and pedal steel player Gordon Huntley, Matthews recorded his debut solo album, Matthews' Southern Comfort, whose sound was rooted in American country music and rockabilly. This was his first significant experience as a songwriter, although the band also covered the likes of Neil Young and Ian and Sylvia. He followed it up by forming a working band using the name of his first album and Second Spring and Later That Same Year followed. The band went through several different lineups and toured extensively for the next two years, to general critical acclaim. They had one commercial success: a cover version of "Woodstock" (written by Joni Mitchell) was a number one hit single in the UK and experienced heavy airplay in Canada reaching #5, as well as reaching #23 on the .... + Informações

We met up with Ian Matthews (Kasabian) in the UK to talk about growing up a drummer and what is coming up for Kasabian. Transcript of the Interview: So my earliest memories when I was a kid. I had a friend of the family. He was a drummer. He used to come and babysit me when I was 2 years old. My parents would go out. I can still remember the excitement and I can still remember the pair of sticks. And I was told to play ma-ma, da-da and single stroke rolls. My dad was pianist/organist and he wanted me to go down that route but I was adamant in my mind that I wanted to be a drummer. When I was about 4 I started to have proper lessons. The drummer Mike Holmwood at the time was the session drummer for Brotherhood of Man. They were the big group of the day they won the Eurvision Song Contest. Mike was a brilliant drummer and also a brilliant teacher. He gave me the foundation for what I do today. I am very lucky for that. Today there is so many people that it wouldn't be fair. So many great drummers today making great music but in the early days, Buddy Rich was my first icon in my mind. I also love Andy Burrows. I got to know him through him playing with Razorlight and also he has the album that he did with I Am Arrows. That is one of our favorites to listen to for a chilled out album, really clever songs, I love the playing on that, the way it's produced and laid out.
