This is an audio dramatization of an excerpt from Frank Peretti's novel "The Oath" first published in 1995. I recieved the book as a birthday gift around that time and have loved it ever since (I've read it three times). Peretti's work here is in league with the best of the masters of horror such as Stephen King or Clive Barker. I'm not the best narrator, but I feel I captured the mood of this segment with the sound effects very well, so enjoy the horror! THE OATH Synopsis: An ancient evil. A long forgotten oath. A town with a deadly secret. In the mountains of the Pacific Northwest, evil has taken hold of the isolated old mining town of Hyde River. Under the cover of darkness it strikes without warning, leaving a bloody and chilling path in its wake. The latest victim, nature photographer Cliff Benson, was burtally killed while camping in the mountains. With little hard evidence to go on, Sheriff Les Collins closes the case chalking it up to be the work of a rouge bear - just like so many other unsolvable deaths and disapearances that have plagued Hyde River over the years. But wildlife biologist Steve Benson refuses to let his brother's death remain a mystery. He is joined in his investigation by Sheriff's Deputy Tracy Ellis who, having grown up in Hyde River, suspects the most powerful man in town of conspiring to cover up evidence in the killing. I started my trip in Poughkeepsie, NY were I saw a northbound "Empire Service" train. I then went to Hyde Park, which is about fourteen minutes north of Poughkeepsie. I railfanned at the bottom of the Vanderbuilt Mansion along the east bank of the Hudson River. The Vanderbuilts originally created the New York Central Railroad, and the ex-NYC line runs right through the property. Happy Thanksgiving!
