Giacomo Meyerbeer - Les Huguenots - "O beau pays" (Joan Sutherland) 5.75 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 21080 exibições The role of Marguerite de Valois in Meyerbeer's "Les Huguenots" isn't exactly as rewarding as it is sometimes described. Basically, she appears exclusively in Act 2 or in three full numbers: a cavatina, a duet and the finale to the act. She also appears in Act 3 but only in Act 2 does the Queen have any kind of prominence. Moreover, the music for the smallish part is extremely difficult (her cavatina is crowned by a short but brutally difficult vocally cabaletta) and does require incredible stamina (her cavatina, here shortened to a mere 5+ minutes, is actually a very long, 12-minute grand scene: the present rendition loses the repeat of the cantabile section, as well as the chorus interjections). And we haven't even got passed the aria yet! So, all in all, a virtuoso comprimario part. Thankfully, the music is quite delightful, if not particularly inspired. The aria itself follows the tradition of, basically, the kind of arias that the great comedian Anna Russell called the "the clear white o' nymphs and shepherd style": the virtuoso writing details Marguerite's pleasure at seeing the beauty of Chenonceaux's gardens. The present rendition is sung by Joan Sutherland who made quite an impact in this role at La Scala at the beginning of her stardom. Though there have been many famous Marguerites in the 20 century, Sutherland seems to be one of the few who can manage the whole aria: for example, between 4:29 - 4:38 we get several roulandes which, as far as I understand, must .... + Informações |

MEYERBEER's Les Huguenots, played on Moline parlor organ 6.00 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 560 exibições Giacomo Meyerbeer (1791-1864) spent five years composing his opera "Les Huguenots" before it premiered at the Paris Opera in 1836. His previous opera, "Robert le Diable," essentially codified what became French Grand Opera: a lavish production sprawling over five acts, virtuoso bel canto singing, two soprano leads, and a central ballet relevant to the plot. Les Huguenots was an immediate and lasting success. Jenny Lind, a famous soprano known as "the Swedish Nightingale," was well known for her interpretations of the roles of Alice in "Robert" and Valentine in "Les Huguenots." In 1851, after her retirement from the opera stage and during her American concert tour, she donated money to the Swedish Lutheran community in Andover, Illinois, where a chapel was built in her honor. The reed organ now used in the Jenny Lind Chapel was built c. 1891 by the Moline Organ Company in Moline, Illinois?a company whose administration, work force and target market were largely Swedish immigrants. This organ was recently restored by Reed Organ Society member David Nestander. The "Selections from Les Huguenots" heard here were arranged "for cabinet organ" in 1879 by Louis Meyer (d. 1897), a composer, arranger and conductor who worked in Philadephia, New Orleans and St. Louis. He may have been born in Europe since we know he performed in Richard Wagner's orchestra in Zurich, Switzerland. Meyer set music from several operas and oratorios for reed organ, and these arrangements were published .... + Informações |

Antonina Nezhdanova, "Nobles seigneurs, salut", Meyerbeer: Les Huguenots (rec. 1914) 4.63 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 2206 exibições Thegreat Russian soprano Antonina Nezhdanova (1873-1950) in Urbain's Rondo, "Nobles seigneurs, salut" from Act 1 of Meyerbeer's grand opera, Les Huguenots. The recording was made in 1914 for Gramophone Co.. The following biographical notes on Nezhdanova comes from Andrea's subito-cantabile: A Site for Collectors of Great Singers of the Past (www.cantabile-subito.de): "Antonina Nezhdanova's parents were school teachers. Her father had a nice tenor voice and her mother was a fine soprano. Her musical talent developed at quite an early age. Her father formed an amateur choir with which she made her first solo debut at the age of seven! She progressed rapidly in the arts of singing, acting and dancing. After studies in Odessa, she graduated from Umberto Masetti's famous class at the Moscow conservatory in 1902 (among other students: Nadezhda Obukhova and Nina Koshetz). She was immediately engaged at the Bolshoi, where she remained for nearly 40 years, singing leading roles in Russian and west European operas, most frequently opposite star tenor Leonid Sobinov. In 1912 she was Gilda at the Monte Carlo Opéra, with Tita Ruffo as Rigoletto and Enrico Caruso as the Duke. Some outstanding roles of her huge repertory: Ludmilla in Glinka's Ruslan and Ludmilla, Tatyana, Lakmé, the Snow Maiden, Volkhova, Elsa (!) and Rosina, Marfa and Antonida. Nezhdanova entered into the communist era with apparent enthusiasm. In 1922 it was felt that selected Russian artists should visit places .... + Informações |
