This medium size Japanese Huntsman spider gave me a bit of a start this morning when I discovered it near my face as I fumbled for my keys at the entrance to my apartment. I apologize for the poor quality of this video which was shot in haste and under poor lighting conditions. The huntsman spider is found in many parts of the world and is notable for its large size and great speed. The spider shown in this video is quite small for the species and likely very young. These spiders have been measured with leg spans up to 250 mm (roughly 12 inches) and make their living by ambushing prey which they actively pursue over open ground. The spiders do not produce a web though they may trail a line of silk as they move which is used to control a fall in the event they find it necessary to jump. A distinguishing characteristic of this spider are the forward-facing two front pairs of legs. The position of the legs gives the body a lower profile compared to many other spiders and may aid the animal in subduing its prey. Huntsman spiders will move to shelter during wet weather and will often enter homes, sheds and other areas which offer protection and a safe hunting ground. Consequently these spiders are sometimes called rain spiders or housekeeping spiders with the latter term referring to their propensity to rid a home of pests such as cockroaches and flies. Graphs have gained a lot of attention in recent years and have been a focal point in many emerging disciplines such as web mining, computational biology, social network analysis, and national security, just to name a few. These so-called scale-free graphs in the real world have very complex structure and their sizes already have reached unprecedented scale. Furthermore, most of the popular graph algorithms are computationally very expensive, making scalable graph analysis even more challenging. To scale these graph algorithms, which have different run-time characteristics and resource requirements than traditional scientific and engineering applications, we may have to adopt vastly different computing techniques than the current state-of-art. In this talk, I will discuss some of the findings from our studies on the performance and scalability of graph algorithms on various computing environments at LLNL, hoping to shed some light on the challenges in scaling large graph algorithms. They either dry out or I have to throw them away after 3 months or so (its not good to keep using old mascara.. You can get eye infections due to bacteria).. I have a box of 80 security envelopes by Mead (security -- tinted color inside) with a price tag of 88 cents. Easy to find, I have 2-3 boxes in my house all the time. So why don't I have cards to fit these boxes? Why do I have to make a special trip to the stationary store to buy "specialty" envelopes when I have 200 envelopes at home? Stop the insanity! Lol So I am going to make some cards that fit standard small business size envelopes. And I'm taking you with me LOL.
