Influential jazz and blues guitarist/singer Lonnie Johnson is most closely identified with this tune through his million-selling recording for King records in the 1940s. Back in 1939, though, it was pretty much just another pleasant ballad that came and went. Of some note to record collectors: Columbia record number 35203 was only the third numbered release for the brand new red-label Columbia brand following a two-year hiatus since the last (blue label) pop series Columbias were issued. 78rpm courtesy of Rick's Vault: Columbia 35203 - Tomorrow Night (Coslow-Grosz) by Horace Heidt & His Musical Knights, vocal by the Heidtlites. Horace Heidt (May 21,1901 - Dec.1,1986) was an American pianist, big band leader, and radio and television personality. His band, Horace Heidt and his Musical Knights, toured vaudeville and performed on radio and television through the 1930s and 1940s. From 1932 to 1953, he was one of the more popular radio bandleaders, heard on both NBC and CBS in a variety of different formats over the years. He began on the NBC Blue Network in 1932 with Shell Oil's Ship of Joy and Answers by the Dancers. During the late 1930s on CBS he did Captain Dobbsie's Ship of Joy and Horace Heidt's Alemite Brigadeers before returning to NBC for 1937-39 broadcasts. His NBC Pot o' Gold radio show (1939-41) was the basis for a 1941 film of the same title. Produced by James Roosevelt (son of the US president) and directed by George Marshall, the film starred James Stewart and Paulette Goddard, and it featured Heidt portraying himself with his band. Carney can be glimpsed in some of the film's musical numbers. The movie gives a fairly accurate depiction of Heidt's radio show but features staged sequences, such as a scene in which a Minnesota farmer (allegedly phoned at random by Heidt during his radio show) is played by well-known character actor John Qualen. From 1940--44 he did Tums Treasure Chest, followed by 1943--45 shows on the Blue Network. Lucky Strike sponsored The American Way on CBS in 1953. Heidt's talent search catapulted such performers as Art Carney, Frankie Carle, Gordon MacRae, the .... + Informações

Horace Heidt (May 21,1901 - Dec.1,1986) was an American pianist, big band leader and radio-TV personality. Born in Alameda, California, Heidt attended Culver Academies. His band, Horace Heidt and His Musical Knights, toured vaudeville and performed on radio and television through the 1930s and 1940s. With fame, Heidt moved into the then-new Brentwood neighborhood of West Los Angeles at 1525 San Vicente Boulevard. He bought the mansion from the widow of a retired dentist, which offered stunning views of Santa Monica Canyon, overlooking the Riviera Country Club and Catalina Island on a clear day. The expansive chateau-style residence, featured in 1927 on the cover of the rotogravure magazine Pictorial California, has long since been razed and the property subdivided. From 1932 to 1953, Heidt was one of the more popular radio bandleaders, heard on both NBC and CBS in a variety of different formats over the years. Singer Matt Dennis got his start with Heidt's band, and Art Carney was the band's singing comedian. The Heidt band's recordings were highly successful with "Gone with the Wind" going to #1 in 1937 and "Ti-Pi-Tin" #1 in 1938. In 1939, "The Man with the Mandolin" ranked as #2 on the charts. Horace Heidt led one of the most successful commercial orchestras of the dance band era. It was also one of the most musically inept??, relying upon the flashy showmanship of such artists as pianist Frankie Carle and guitarist Alvino Rey to dazzle the crowd and entertain the dancers. Heidt never took himself too seriously, though. He was a businessman, and he gave his listeners what they wanted. If that was a crime then Horace Heidt was guilty of being a master criminal. Though Heidt studied piano as a youth his main interest was athletics. He played football for the University of California at Berkeley and planned on turning professional. A back injury, however, ended his ambitions, and he decided instead to enter the music business, forming a small orchestra in 1923. Originally called Horace Heidt and His Californians, the band's popularity, and size, grew as the decade progressed. In 1929 the group joined the Fanchon-Marco vaudeville circuit and later toured Europe. Upon their return to the states they disbanded. Heidt formed a new orchestra in 1932. By 1936 Horace Heidt and His Brigadiers had their own national radio program out of the Drake Theater in Chicago. Heidt gained tremendous popularity when he began to feature cash giveaways to listeners. Called the Pot o' Gold program, it became a sensation and even spawned a feature film. Heidt's orchestra later came to be known by its best remembered moniker, Horace Heidt and His Musical Knights. While his early grouping .... + Informações

Horace Heidt & His Orchestra - What a Wonderful Wedding That Wil Be, Fox-Trot (Kahal-Wheeler-Fain), Victor 1928 NOTE: Horace HEIDT - American pianist and bandleader, born in 1901 in Alameda, CA. In the 1920s, after an injury knocked him out of his plans to play football he formed his first band named The Californians, and managed to slowly build a following in the Berkeley area before eventually widening its fan base by appearing in other locations, including the vaudeville circuit in New York and prestigeous Hotel Drake in Chicago. Horace Heidt's talents didn't depend on his own musical abilities. Although he could play piano, he usually left the keyboard to others. And he was never really known as a composer or arranger, like so many of his contemporaries. But he did have two things going for him. He had the ability to enlist talented young performers in his band, and he knew what the public liked. As a result, in 1930s his band -- now called the Music Knights - was one of the more popular dance orchestras, heard on both NBC and CBS in a variety of different formats over the years. Heidt's 1939--41 radio show was adapted for this 1941 film. The Heidt band's recordings were highly-successful with "Gone with the Wind" going to No. 1 in 1937 and "Ti-Pi-Tin" to No. 1 in 1938. In 1939, "The Man with the Mandolin" ranked No. 2 on the charts. By the close of World War II, the band's popularity was beginning to wind down and Heidt began spending most of his time tending to his .... + Informações
