The notoriously reclusive Californian hasnt cracked the mainstream since, opting to release a few records here and there with various projects. But theres good news: Sandoval is back. With her band Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions (which features My Bloody Valentine drummer Colm Ó Cíosóig), Sandoval is gearing up to release her second record since the acts 2001 debut Bavarian Fruit Bread. The new disc Through the Devil Softly ? out September 15th ? is a lovely, 11-track collection of narcotic, folk tunes centered by Sandovals breathy, irresistible seductive croon. So what took so long? I dont really notice the time, says Sandoval coyly. We dont keep track of the days and months. And the years. Later they smoothed it down, as this clip exemplifies circa 1994, Late Night Dave US TV. The band would break up completely a couple of years later. Singer/writer Hope Sandoval (of bands Mazzy Star, & Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions) collaborated with Scottish guitar legend Bert Jansch in co-writing & performing the song "All This Remains" from Jansch's 2002 album "Edge of a Dream". Hope wrote lyrics & melody. Jansch also plays guitar on two tracks from Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions' 2001 album "Bavarian Fruit Bread", on songs "Charlotte" & "Butterfly Mornings" (both findable at YT). Hope said Bert wanted her to play guitar on the recordings along with him, which she did. But feeling her playing paled too much next to his, she removed her guitar tracks from the mixes, & kept just Bert's! Jansch recorded his song "Courting Blues" on his 1965 self-titled album. Hope's live cover of the song was a regular feature of shows of her tours of recent years. I've uploaded a nice version to YT, See: "Hope Sandoval - Live 2009, London, pt.1 (of 13) - Courting Blues (unreleased Bert Jansch cover). " A quote from Hope on how she felt about working with Jansch: "When he came out...to record with us, it was unbelievable to be in the same room with him. I mean, he's a genius. It was very emotional for me. After the sessions, I sat in my hotel room listening to the recordings and crying." A long time fan of Jansch, Hope first got to know him when he shared the bill on some of her shows after she sought him out to play on the same bill. After moving to San Francisco, Cabic joined the rock band Tussle, simultaneously recruiting other local musicians including cellist Alissa Anderson, troubadour Devendra Banhart, along with special guests Colm O'Ciosoig (My Bloody Valentine), Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star) and the then-unknown Joanna Newsom among others to record Vetiver. The album was released in 2004 to high critical praise from around the world Like an album of dreamy, gentle songs that George Harrison would have written in some sunny country garden. There's hypnotic finger-picking on guitar, a warm steady drone of cello. The band includes neo-folkie mystic Devendra Banhart, who does minimal singing and songwriting for the most part, but one can hear the aesthetic of Banhart's music here, even if the songs aren't as haunting. The high point is probably "Angel's Share," a lovely song that has Hope Sandoval from the band Mazzy Star singing languid and sweet harmony vocals. There's also a winning and odd swooning eulogy to the Seattle Arboretum.
