He is best known for writing the melody to "Stardust" (1927), one of the most-recorded American songs of all time.Carmichael spelled it "Star Dust", but the space is usually omitted. Last night I uploaded Harry Nilsson's "Thursday" because it reminds me of fall, and down here in Texas its hot as hell. I wake up craving crisp autumn mornings. It's weather that will make you feel like a strawberry (reference to Lady Salvia). Anyway, Memphis in June reminds me of that, too, despite what an obviously lazy summer song it is, so here it is. I could only find a video with some dude playing it on guitar, and he was badass, but I really dig Hoagy Carmichael's voice and style. Check out "Two Sleepy People." The music was written by Hoagy Carmichael, the lyrics were written by Frank Loesser, the song was actually performed by Larry Clinton & his Orchestra. It is often played as a duet, in C Major. It is a popularly played piece on the piano, however this song (the original) is actually no where on YouTube, which is why I am uploading it. I first became interested in this, (after being able to play a fairly good version myself), I found a video of it, and researched it a little. It is, possibly most famously featured in the film Big, where Tom Hanks plays it on a supersize keyboard. (It's also the theme tune for Big) Another popular appearance was in Stuart Little. From www.hoagy.com Hoagland Howard Carmichael was born in 1899 in Bloomington. His father was an itinerant laborer who moved his family throughout the Midwest looking for steady work, always returning to Indiana. "Home" was back in Bloomington, where they'd left his wife Lida's golden oak piano. She helped support the family by playing at the local movie house and for university dances. "Ragtime was my lullaby," Hoagy said, and though his mother was thrilled when he picked out a tune on the golden oak, she warned him: "Music is fun, Hoagland, but it don't buy you cornpone." Lida Carmichael thought her son might grow up to be president of a railroad. He might have, too, because ambition burned hot in him, but in 1919 he heard Louie Jordan's band (not to be confused with Louis Jordan who had a popular band in the thirties) in Indianapolis and this black ensemble of early jazz players "exploded in me almost more music than I could consume." Hoagy went on to study law at Indiana University but he was already a "jazz maniac" and his own band, The Carmichael Syringe Orchestra, was made up of a gang of loose cannons whose spiritual leader was a Dada-inspired poet named Monk. "There are other things in this world besides hot music," Monk advised Hoagy in a serious moment, "I forget what they are--but they're around."
