Charlie Bowman(fiddle), Al Hopkins(vocal) and the Original Hillbillies from 1926. Charles Thomas "Charlie" Bowman was the fiddler with the original Al Hopkin's Hill Billies, the first country string band to gain national notoriety on radio and records. The group is generally thought to be responsible for establishing the string band as an important part of country music. When the recording company asked for the group's name, one member mentioned that they were just an "old band of hill billies." The name stuck. Donna Douglas (born September 26, 1933) is an American actress best known for her role as Elly May Clampett, in the long-running television series The Beverly Hillbillies. Born as Doris Smith in Pride, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, she was the only daughter of Emmett Ratcliff Smith Sr. (1907--1988) and his wife, the former Elma Robinson (1910--2003). Douglas attended St. Gerard High School, and after high school she married, had a son, divorced, and won some beauty contests, all within the span of a few years. She was awarded the titles "Miss Baton Rouge" and, in 1957, was "Miss New Orleans." Douglas moved to New York to pursue a career in entertainment and started out as a model for toothpaste ads. She was featured as the "Letters Girl" on The Perry Como Show in 1957, and as the "Billboard Girl" on The Steve Allen Show in 1959. These and other TV appearances led New York photographers and newspaper reporters to award her the "Miss By-line" crown, which she wore on The Ed Sullivan Show. Producer Hal Wallis saw the Sullivan episode and cast her in the role of Marjorie Burke in the movie drama Career (1959) starring Anthony Franciosa, Dean Martin and Shirley MacLaine. Main cast JD "Jed" Clampett Although he had received little formal education, Jed Clampett has a good deal of common sense. A good-natured man, he is the apparent head of the family. Jed's wife (Elly May's mother) died but is referred to in the episode "Duke Steals A Wife" as Rose Ellen. Jed is shown to be an expert marksman and is extremely loyal to his family and kinfolk. The huge oil pool in the swamp he owned was the beginning of his rags-to-riches journey to Beverly Hills. Although he longs for the old ways back in the hills, he makes the best of being in Beverly Hills. Whenever he has anything on his mind, he sits on the curbstone of his mansion and whittles until he comes up with the answer. Jed's full first name is never given in the television series, though 'Jedediah' was used in the 1993 Beverly Hillbillies theatrical movie (coincidentally, on Ebsen's subsequent series, Barnaby Jones, Barnaby's nephew JR was also named Jedediah). In the early 1980s, Stephen Kay, who had worked for the prosecution in the trial, became alarmed that Leslie Van Houten had gathered 900 signatures on a petition for her parole. He contacted Sharon Tate's mother, who said she was sure she could do better, and the two mounted a publicity campaign, collecting over 350000 signatures supporting the denial of parole. Cummings performed mainly in comedies, but was effective in his few dramas, especially two Alfred Hitchcock films, Saboteur (1942) and Dial M for Murder (1954). He achieved stardom in 1939 in Three Smart Girls Grow Up, opposite Deanna Durbin. His many film comedies include: The Devil and Miss Jones (1941) with Jean Arthur, and The Bride Wore Boots (1946) with Barbara Stanwyck. Cummings gave memorable performances in three notable dramas: Kings Row (1942) with friend Ronald Reagan, Saboteur (1942) with Priscilla Lane and Norman Lloyd, and Dial M for Murder (1954), with Grace Kelly and Ray Milland. Cummings also starred in You Came Along (1945), which featured a screenplay by Ayn Rand. Muriel Landers (October 27, 1921 -- February 19, 1977) was an American actress, singer and dancer. She made over 30 film and television appearances between 1950 and 1971. Modern viewers will recognize Landers as Joe Besser's sister "Tiny" in the Three Stooges film Sweet and Hot. In this episode, Landers sang "Let's Fall in Love", revealing a strong and sultry singing voice." Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Landers made television appearances on such shows as Lidsville, Hogan's Heroes, The Jack Benny Show, The Red Skelton Show and The Beverly Hillbillies.
