I have just seen the movie " The Curious Case of Bejamin Button". At the beginning of the movie, a clock maker called Mr. Gateau makes a strange clock with its hands running... anticlockwise. The man says that he just wants to turn back time so that his dead son could return home from the battle... That scene rather impressed me. Wondering if there was really a clock like that makes me think of this song. Besides this English version, I really like its Japanese one performed by Ken Hirai (even though I don't know Japanese :)) There is also a Korean version somewhere on this website that goes along with a soulful clip. This bust of composer Henry Clay Work is located on the green in Middletown, Connecticut. The following information is from the plaque in front of the statue. "Henry Clay Work was born in Middletown in 1832, the son of an impassioned abolitionist named Alanson Work. When Henry was about three years old, his father moved the family to Illinois so that he could help slaves escape to Canada on the Underground Railroad. During the next few years Alanson Work helped over 3000 slaves reach freedom and was finally arrested and imprisoned for his activities. After his release from prison, Alanson Work brought his family back to Middletown for several years. When Henry Clay Work grew up, he worked as a printer in Hartford and Chicago. In his spare time, he taught himself music and began composing songs. Before long, his first song was published; in the decades following, Work penned some of the 19th century's favorite tunes. Many focused on social issues of the time, such as the temperance movement or the condition of African Americans. In 1865, Work wrote "Marching Through Georgia", a Civil War anthem celebrating Union General William T. Sherman's 1864 campaign that destroyed Confederate supplies, liberated slaves, and helped bring about the south's surrender. Henry Clay Work's most popular composition was "Grandfather's Clock", a sentimental ballad about his grandfather's "treasure and pride", a tall clock that " stopp'd short, never to go again, when the old man died." Brother Charlie Pratt sings "My Grandfather's Clock." Before it was written (over a hundred years ago), clocks that stood on the floor were called floor clocks. In Piercebridge, North Yorkshire, England, there was a quaint country lodge known as the George Hotel. It was run by two bachelor brothers, named Jenkins. When one of the brothers died, their floor clock started losing time, when it had been very accurate, before that. The old clock stopped, on the day that the other (older) brother died. This song was requested by Dolphindream15. Henry Clay Work wrote this song in 1865. No reason is given for the ship's failure to return, but this was not an uncommon event in the days of sailing ships. The melody has been used for a number of other songs, the two best known being "Wreck of the Old 97" about a 1903 train wreck and "Charlie on the MTA" written in 1948 as a campaign song for Walter A. O'Brian about a man who couldn't get off a Boston subway train because the MTA had added an exit fare to get off the train. It was a big hit for The Kingston Trio in 1959.
