Hazel Meyers was a Black vaudeville artist in the 1920s who made records that were marketed as blues, and not an inconsiderable number of them. She made 41 titles in all between September, 1923 and August of 1924, primarily for Ajax, but also for Brunswick (issued on Vocalion), Pathé, Banner, Bell, and Emerson. Her last two sides were made for Okeh in June, 1926. She frequently worked with accompanists of outstanding quality, including Fletcher Henderson, Porter Grainger, Bubber Miley, Don Redman and even, on one occasion, Fats Waller. About her career on stage, details are much more sketchy. She appeared in Steppin' High, a Harlem variety show for which Fletcher Henderson's Orchestra provided the music, and is known to have made other appearances in black vaudeville through 1930. Otherwise, nothing else is known about Hazel Meyers. ---------------------------- Fats Waller (born Thomas Wright Waller on May 21, 1904 ? December 15, 1943) was an American jazz pianist, organist, composer and comedic entertainer. His original name was Thomas Wright Waller. He began playing the piano as a child, and later studied with Carl Bohm and Leopold Godowsky. He became a protégé of James P. Johnson, who gave him piano lessons and furthered his career. From about 1920, Waller appeared in night-clubs and theaters, and in the 1930s he began recording. Waller's style influenced many jazz pianists. This video is for historical and educational purposes Birleanna Blanks was born in Iowa on February 18, 1899 , of African American/Native American descent. Her parents soon moved to East St. Louis, IL. where she attended school and college and was a schoolteacher up until around 1912. She then appeared with her sister Arsceola as a singing/dancing act as "The Blanks Sisters" playing vaudeville in theaters. Birleanna then went out on her own as a singer/actress appearing in many productions in New York City, Chicago, as well as Jersey City, and Newark, NJ including "They're Off", "Derby Day In Dixie" and as the role of Mae Barnes in the "Lucky Sambo Revue", from 1919 until 1927. In 1922-1923 she was a member of The Three Dixie Songbirds along with Amanda Randolph & Hilda Perkins, with the act playing club dates in Chicago. Birleanna left the business in 1928 and later married baseball player Chesley Cunningham. Birleanna passed away in New York City at the Florence Nightingale Nursing Home from cancer on August 12, 1968 and is buried near Woodlawn Cemetary in The Bronx. Despite her credentials in the theater, Birleanna Blanks only recorded two songs during her career. This recording is the sole survivor. There's probably only one copy of the record that is known to exist, and the other side "Potomac River Blues" was too destroyed to duplicate due to drop-outs and distortion. So this isn't like any of my other videos that I've posted, this one actually relates to the music. When I was listening to "Behind These Hazel Eyes" by Kelly Clarkson, it just sounded like something that Bella might have been thinking during New Moon, so this is what I made out of it :) I even added some humor to it! When it says "I'm torn into pieces" I put on a picture of Edward ripping up James (lol!) and when "can't pretend", I put a picture of Edward sparkling, which is when Edward isn't pretending to be human around Bella anymore. In addition to "Hi Hi Hazel", they recorded the first version of "There's A Kind of Hush" that I ever heard--months before Herman's Hermits' version. The group consisted of the Calvert brothers, Gary (age 11 or 12 on guitar and lead vocals, Greg (the oldest at 14 or 15) on bass, and Steve(age 7 or 8) on drums.
