The song was inspired by an event which happened in Belfast, Northern Ireland. In 1971 Sergeant Michael Willetts of 3 PARA cleared a room in Springfield Road RUC Police Station of civilians because a bomb with a short burning fuse had been planted by the Provisional IRA. After the room had been cleared, Sgt Willetts then slammed the door to the room which contained the bomb, but realising the door was not strong enough to absorb the blast, he pressed his body against the door, shielding the people on the other side. This is a song written by Harvey Andrews set in the time of World War 1, going off to fight in the Somme, not knowing that most people who went out there never came back. The image of a blanched photograph still telling it's story in the mind of Margarita just breaks me up for some reason. I haven't played this song for a long time.. it's a great song.. + Informações

1986 0722 This song was a favourite in Beggars Mantle live appearances and recorded on their long unavailable album, "Home That I Love". This clip is from a session of songs recorded as "inserts" for the Border TV "Look Around" news magazine programme on 22nd July 1986. They're accompanied here on the Bass Guitar by Lorenz Cairns. Beggars Mantle were a folk duo from Fife, working between 1983 and 1989 when Bruce Davies and Bill McArthur agreed to end their partnership. During their career, they did much TV work for STV, Grampian and Border.
