The odd thing about this recording is that Lauder keeps coughing throughout the recording, barely able to get through the last chorus and coughing even after the orchestra stops. Here's one of my 10 inch Harry Lauder records. I've corrected the speed issues for the most part by cleaning up the motor even more and oiling a couple of spots. Hiss is still a problem, though, I have to tweak my levels. You can read more about Harry Lauder here: en.wikipedia.org He led quite a life - I'm interesting in getting more of his records, they're very entertaining. I'm trying to adjust for the hiss, but it's very difficult with the camera of the automatic levels it uses. Yet, if I set it on manual, I have a tendancy to overload it because of the sharp dynamic contrasts on some records. So....hiss it is. Sir Henry Lauder (Aug.4,1870 -- Feb.26,1950), born at Portobello, Edinburgh and known professionally as Harry Lauder, was an international Scottish entertainer. Singing helped Lauder through the arduous work of a miner and he was encouraged by his fellow workers to sing in halls. His first professional engagement was in nearby Larkhall where he got a five shilling fee for the night. After more evenings around Hamilton he went to the weekly go-as-you please night held by Mrs Christina Baylis at her Scotia Music Hall/Metropole Theatre in Glasgow who told him to gain experience by touring halls around the country with a concert party, which he did and then turned full time professional. Lauder provided comedy and songs of Scotland and Ireland. In 1905 his success in leading the Howard & Wyndham pantomime at the Theatre Royal Glasgow, for which he wrote I Love A Lassie, made him a national British star, and obtained contracts with Sir Edward Moss and others. By 1911 he could command a $1000 a night on his USA tours.In 1912 he was top of the bill at Britain`s first ever Royal Command Variety performance, in front of King George V, organised by Alfred Butt. He was Britain`s best known entertainer. He toured the world extensively during his forty-year career, including 22 trips to the United States, for which he had his own train, the Harry Lauder Special, and several to Australia, to which his brother John had emigrated. Lauder launched his career at the Britannia Panopticon Music Hall, Glasgow. Lauder is said to have first appeared in his music-hall career as an Irish comedian. He toured the world extensively during his forty-year career, including 22 trips to the United States and several to Australia, to which his brother John had emigrated. He was, at one time, the highest-paid performer in the world, making the equivalent of £12700 a night plus expenses, and was the first British performer to sell more than a million records. Lauder's appeal was not limited to popular tastes; he was a favourite of King Edward VII and a friend of Sir Thomas Lipton, the tea merchant. Lauder is perhaps most well-known for his performances in Highland regalia (Kilt, Sporran, Tam o'shanter and twisted walking stick) and singing songs with a Scottish theme (Roamin' in the Gloamin' etc.). This image was possibly a major reason for his popularity abroad with Scottish emigres. When World War I broke out, Lauder was in Melbourne on one of his Australian tours.
