My cover of "Mountain of Love". "Mountain of Love" is a song written by Harold Dorman. Dorman released his (original) version as a single in 1960. It performed well, reaching the number 21 position on the Billboard Hot 100. It was the highest charting single of his career. This cover is done in the style of Harold Dorman, whose (original) rendition I prefer over that of Johnny Rivers' remake (although I very much liked Rivers' version) because of the much greater feeling that Dorman put into this song, and the sadness he evokes and it just plain sounds better to me. (I never heard Dorman's version until after I recorded my cover of Johnny Rivers' rendition). As with all my videos, comments are answered directly to the commenter's inbox. Dorman was a one-hit artist, whose "Mountain Of Love", fared better when it was covered by Johnny Rivers four years later. Dorman's music career began when he left the army in 1955. His first sessions were recorded for the legendary Sun Records in 1957 but were never released. Two years later Dorman was signed to Rita Records, owned by former Sun artist Billy Lee Riley and guitarist Roland Janes, who had played with Jerry Lee Lewis. Dorman's first single was his own "Mountain Of Love", one of five tracks he recorded at the Hi Records studio in Memphis. The record started to sell well in Georgia, at which point strings were added to the master tape and it was re-released. The single ultimately reached number 21 in 1960. Dorman continued to record for Rita for another year; then he recorded again for Sun until 1962, but failed to produce any further chart hits. In 1964 Rivers recorded "Mountain Of Love" and took it to number 9 in the US charts. Dorman's only other notable success came when country singer Charley Pride cut his "Mississippi Cotton Picking Delta Town". Pride also covered "Mountain Of Love". Here is the flip side of Moved To Kansas City. Whereas "Kansas City" is an uptempo rockabilly number, this sweet song is a ballad (sounds a bit like I Can't Stop Loving You). And he wrote both of the songs (as he did with almost all of his 20 or so released songs). It's really a shame that this guy never made it to a major label, he really wrote some nice stuff.
