Reefer Man - Harlan Lattimore & Connies Inn Orchestra Sidney deParis - 1932 3.55 min. | 4.3333335 avaliação | 704 exibições Flashbacks 1920's - 1940's Novelty Songs Of An Era Long Gone Bye. Drug Songs. Harlan Lattimore (November 25, 1908- July,1980), was a popular African American singer with several jazz orchestras of the 1930s, most notably Don Redman's. He was known as "The Colored Bing Crosby" Lattimore's behavior became unreliable and erratic in the mid 30's, and he made his last recordings with Redman in 1936. After service in WWII, he dropped out of the music scene. Except for an attempt at a comeback, in the late 40's, Harlan Lattimore slid further and further into musical obscurity until his death in 1980. Although the name Harlan Lattimore is now looked upon as a mere footnote in American popular music, there can be no denying his role as a pioneering African-American singer who established a style and role later filled by such musical luminaries as Billy Eckstine and Nat King Cole.. + Informações |

Don Redman Orchestra, Bill Robinson - Doin' The New Low Down (1932) 2.47 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 4559 exibições Donald Matthew Redman (July 29,1900 - Nov.30,1964) was an American jazz musician, arranger, and composer. Redman was born in Piedmont, West Virginia. His father was a music teacher, his mother was a singer. Don began playing the trumpet at the age of 3, joined his first band at 6 and by age 12 he was proficient on all wind instruments ranging from trumpet to oboe as well as piano. He studied at Storer's College in Harper's Ferry and at the Boston Conservatory, then joined Billy Page's Broadway Syncopaters in New York City. In 1922 Don Redman joined the Fletcher Henderson orchestra, mostly playing clarinet and saxophones. He soon began assisting in writing arrangements, and Redman did much to formulate the sound that was to become big band Swing. In 1927 Jean Goldkette convinced Redman to join the Detroit, Michigan-based band McKinney's Cotton Pickers as their Musical Director and Leader. He was responsible for their great success and arranged about half of their music . Redman was occasionally featured as their vocalist, displaying his charming, humorous vocal style. Redman then formed his own band in 193, which got a residency at the famous Manhattan jazz club Connie's Inn. Redman's band got a recording contract with Brunswick Records and a series of radio broadcasts. Redman and his orchestra also provided music for the animated short I Heard, part of the Betty Boop series produced by Fleischer Studios and distributed by Paramount. Redman composed original music for the .... + Informações |

Blues In My Heart : Bert Lown's Orch & Martin Lewis-graphics 3.07 min. | 4.962963 avaliação | 5297 exibições Bert Lown & His Biltmore Hotel Orchestra v. Elmer Feldkamp - Blues In My Heart (King Carter- Irving Mills), Victor 1931 ----------------------------------- Bert LOWN (1903 -- 1962) led a series of superior jazz-oriented dance bands during 1929-33. He was one of the composers (with Hamm, Chauncy Gray and Dave Bennett) of the standard "Bye Bye Blues" which they first recorded on May 1, 1925. As a violinist Lown worked for a time with cornetist Fred Hamm's band. In 1929 Lown began his series of recordings and among his sidemen were (at various times) trombonist Miff Mole, drummer Stan King and bass saxophonist Adrian Rollini (who was succeeded by Spencer Clark in 1931). During 1930-31, Lown's band was employed regularly at the Biltmore Hotel in New York, frequently broadcasting on the radio. During this period Lown also composed "You're The One I Care For" and "Tired." His orchestra only recorded two sessions apiece in 1932 and 1933 and by the mid-30's Lown was no longer leading a band, instead booking and managing orchestras before dropping out of music altogether. In later years, Bert Lown held executive positions in CBS tv until suffering a heart attack in 1962. -------------------------------- Martin LEWIS (1881 - 1962) born in Castlemaine, Australia. He lived in New York City most of his life, with the exception of several years during the Depression when he moved to Connecticut. But in 1933, missing the city, he returned to New York. Martin Lewis became in the 1920s .... + Informações |
