I knew that the three string players that were going to perform this piece are virtuosos and this is what inspired me to write something that "shreds." At the same time, I wanted to pay tribute to the three Metal bands that I am closest to: Antagony, All Shall Perish and Hacksaw to the Throat. I found three distinct musical trademarks from each band and used recombinant techniques to form the piece. The title comes from the opening lines to Hacksaw to the Throat's "Cascading Down." I listened to the song repeatedly when I composed "Collapsing Obsidian Sun," and my friend (fellow UCSC graduate student [in Math] who composed it) even showed me how to play it on guitar. Time for a top ten that I wasn't sure was ever going to happen. The Iron Sheik is an iconic wrestler, both to the young and those who grew up watching him. After defecting to the United States in 1972, he became a wrestling coach, where he caught the eye of Verne Gagne, promoter and owner of the AWA. He would debut for the AWA later that year, and seven years later, made his first appearance for the WWWF, under the name of Hussein Arab. This tenure wouldn't last long, as he would depart following an unsuccessful match against then-champion Bob Backlund. In the Mid-South promotion, he would become known as the Iron Sheik. In 1983, he would once again sign with the WWWF, now known as the WWF. He would become known as the master of the Suplex, often suplexing his opponents before locking on the Camel Clutch. The day after Christmas, he would defeat Bob Backlund to become the WWF Champion. However, the reign would last little more than a month, as he would be defeated by Hulk Hogan. Legend has it that Sheik was offered a sum of money by someone to break Hogan's legs during the match, though he didn't make any effort to do so. Sheik would never rise back to the ranks of WWF Champion, and in 1985, after a brutal feud with Sgt. Slaughter, Sheik formed a team with Russian Nikolai Volkoff, defeating the US Express for the Tag Team Titles at the inaugural Wrestlemania event. Here is an old-school pro rasslin' jobber squash. Hacksaw Higgins out-weighs Mike Mattigan (or Mannigan?) by about 50 pounds. He uses a series of stiff punishing moves to kill the helpless opponent including a Pile Driver, Body Slam out on the floor, and repeatedly picking the man up on the count of Two.
