This separates the hands into two pitch-class fields; the right hand music is diatonic, the left hand music is pentatonic. This étude is dedicated to Pierre Boulez. No. 3: Touches bloquées. La versió revisada es va estrenar el 28 de juliol de 1997 a Salzburg. Estrena a Espanya. Le Grand Macabre, òpera del compositor hongarès György Ligeti basada en La Ballade du Grand Macabre de Michel de Ghelderode, fou estrenada a Estocolm el 1978 i ha obtingut un lloc molt estimable en el repertori líric contemporani. Des de la seva estrena, se n'han fet nombroses produccions als principals teatres d'òpera mundials. L'obra de Ghelderode (1934), inspirada en les danses de la mort medievals i la pintura flamenca (Pieter Brueghel i Hieronymus Bosch), fou convertida pel llibretista Michael Meschke i el mateix compositor en una brillant i exuberant peça de teatre de l'absurd, amb una gran càrrega irònica i grotesca, centrada en el tema de la fi del món, amb personatges pròxims al Grand Guignol, que el mateix Ligeti qualifica d'«apocalipsi còmica». La música és un brillant collage d'estils (de Monteverdi a Wagner i Verdi, passant per Beethoven i el món del jazz) amb l'orquestra ampliada per instruments insòlits (clàxons i altres elements de percussió), i amb alternança de passatges agressius i salvatges i lírics.
