Originally an eight-piece band, Grobschnitt released their self-titled album on Brain Records in 1972 before paring down into their standard five-piece unit. Their first record is stylistically very different from the symphonic sound that became their hallmark. As was common with many German bands of the time, Grobschnitt sang in English until the early 1980s, despite touring exclusively in Germany. The band accrued a loyal fan base through its live performances which included pyrotechnics and German comedic sketches. Highlight performances include Solar Music, an extended mostly-instrumental piece which lasted up to an hour. Grobschnitt were also known for their stamina on stage, frequently performing shows in excess of two hours. Die längste dieser ununterbrochenen Improvisationen konnte über eine Stunde dauern und trug den Titel Solar Music oder auch Powerplay. Die Liedtexte der Band waren zunächst auf englisch, später kamen dann verstärkt deutschsprachige Texte hinzu. In beiden Fällen äußerte sich die Band zu gesellschaftlich umstrittenen Themen wie beispielsweise der Friedensbewegung, der Fortschritts- und Technikgläubigkeit oder dem Protest gegen den Ausbau der Atomenergie. Ein typisches Beispiel für dieses Engagement ist der Text von Vater Schmidt's Wandertag auf dem Album Jumbo. Raintime in the sunshine, Mayday Symphony, The Clown moves the Sahara, he could move on free. There were dreams that we all had together. We had all the music, we had love and fun.
