Hard to know where to start with this one. Was driving into Manhattan one day and heard an interview with Bob Gaudio of The Four Seasons, a very fine American songwriter in my opinion. He related the story of how he'd come to write "Rag Doll" back in 1965/66. Seems he was driving into Manhattan too and, when exiting the bridge, was waiting at a light (or stuck in traffic) where a very young, very cute but destitute woman was cleaning car windows. She cleaned his window and when he went to tip her found he didn't have any small bills. I believe he gave her a $20 and he said her face lit up so brightly that it just broke his heart. That moved me to want to cover this tune someday. Once out in California w/The Gone Jackals, I threw together an arrangement for this tune that was strictly intended for live shows. This was a novel thought as the rooms we were playing were gravitating more towards bands like Gwar and DK influenced outfits by then. I stuck to my guns though -- cost us dearly with that particular crop of local bookers. Co-Producer Gary Hobish really liked the sound of our live version and was very insistent to have us record it for "Out & About with The Gone Jackals". I said I'd give it a shot and here is the result. For current Bonedrivers aficionados, I've thrown in some LP covers and 45 jackets of bands and tunes we currently cover (in our own bombastic fashion) to add context to where we're comin' from. Here's the video of "Legacy" we made at LucasArts' Industrial Light and Magic Studios in San Rafael, California to support their "Full Throttle" PC game. For clarity, all of the music that comprised the full R&R Soundtrack was written and recorded for our "Bone To Pick" CD before we were contacted by LucasArts. We were adding the final touches to "Bone To Pick" at Sound and Light Studios in San Francisco when Studio Owner/Friend/Chief Engineer Michael Molenda, currently Editor of "Guitar Player Magazine", sent over some of our tracks to Lucas' Gaming Music Director Peter McConnell who was looking for music for "Full Throttle". Peter liked what he heard so, long story short, we began working triple overtime to get this music added to the game with a rapidly approaching release date looming. LucasArts had planned to use an in-house soundtrack, but it tested poorly, putting them way behind schedule. Being that we were pressed for time, I worked primarily from story boards and selected each piece of GJ music for each scene in the game which required "biker" music. I re-mixed the entire CD for optimum sound knowing this game would be heard primarily through PC speakers with only a small number of available bytes for music. Peter created the ambient music and handled all technical aspects of applying this work to the game itself. Peter's belief in the band is tangible in his introduction. Here is a clip of The Gone Jackals performing "I'm Workin' On You", a tune that got into rotation on San Diego's huge affiliate 91X radio station, put us on nice little roll. KUSF, broadcasting from The University of San Francisco, also picked up on this track as did many college radio stations throughout the country. This airplay boosted our ability to get mo' better live shows, start playing on College Campuses and start doing "sweeps" which were akin to mini tours, going out for a week or two and playing as many dates as we could handle. Was a fun time. Our performance is preceded by a short interview by show Host Bruce Lattimer -- quite a character! I've left it attached, seemed to give this clip context and might be the only video interview during this period of the band. Thought it might also be mildly amusing to watch me squirm in my seat, as is my natural inclination, during interviews. We feature Dave Shamrock on drums here, a much sought after but reclusive, shy musician from the East Bay. Dave also helped assemble some of the material which became "Bone To Pick" but left the band before recording anything with us. A great guy and a substantial talent - just a different temperament from the three other GJs who were certainly not everyone's cup of tea. Trey had split to join Big Bang Beat which was/is a high paying gig that took him to Hawaii and other exotic locales. He re-joined the band for our third CD "Blue Pyramid".
