Part of my "Reflections" series. The Golden Gate Quartet formed in the mid 30s and is perhaps the best known of the jubilee style gospel quartets, having their heyday mostly during the 40s. They disbanded in the late 40s but regrouped in 1955, performing mostly in Europe. Their style can be heard in almost all gospel groups that followed and their influence on Elvis Presley (and their arrangement) can be heard in his rendition of Swing Down Sweet Chariot.. + Informações

Golden Gate Quartet--1994 UGHA Paul Brembley,Clyde Wright,Clyde Riddick & Orlandus Wilson The Golden Gate left the shore's of America in the early 1950's and found fame and fortune in Europe. They were based in Paris, France but performed throughout the world, except for America. It seems our musical tastes change all too quickly and as a consequence talented performers here either leave the business or leave America. Upon hearing that the Golden Gate Quartet were coming back to America, the Smithsonian Institute invited them to attend a ceremony in Washington, DC. The Gates declined that invitation because they felt it would detract from the real reason they came back to America which was to be honored by UGHA. Orlandus Wilson, spokesman for the 'Gate made note that UGHA was the only organization in over 40 years that remembered the Golden Gate Quartet. They in turn honored UGHA by performing at a meeting show the evening before the Hall of Fame. It was easy to see why they still play before sold out concerts around the world.. + Informações

Here is a full concert of the Golden Gate Quartet in Berlin. It is from the late 50's or early 60's. I received this video in a trade about 1980 and have never seen another copy. One of the best gospel quartets of all time, formed in 1934 and most active throughout the 40's and 50's . I first became aware of them back in the early 50's from an Okeh record, a subsidiary production of Columbia. This is "Old Blind Barnabas," one of their better known hits. A version of this was contained in an old film, but this is the recorded version that was popular back in the late 40's. The clarity of their diction and the precision of the rhythm is quite remarkable.. + Informações
