Glen Gray Knoblauch, known as Glen Gray, (June 7,1900 - Aug.23,1963, Plymouth, Massachusetts) was a jazz saxophonist and leader of the Casa Loma Orchestra. Gray was born Metamora, Illinois. When he was 13 years old, Gray organized a group known as Spike's Jazz Band. Gray graduated from Roanoke High School. He is said to have joined the army at seventeen and two years later he was living at home with his family. He was employed as a bill clerk for the railroad. He attended Illinois Wesleyan University but left to work for the Santa Fe Railroad. In 1927, his Orange Blossoms Band was renamed the Casa Loma Orchestra, after Casa Loma in Toronto, where the band played for eight months. This tune, the radio theme song for the Casa Loma Orchestra, is one of the smoothest and most beautiful ballads recorded during the Big Band era. With this arrangement, which juxtaposes Billy Rauch's upper register trombone over a full clarinet section playing in the lower register, the Casa Loma Orchestra approaches the sublety of the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Clarinet solo is by Clarence Hutchenrider. It is said that Billy Rauch practiced his trombone solo for half an hour before each broadcast, so he would continue to play it perfectly. Many other bands "covered" this tune, but none featured a copy of Rauch's solo. From the original 78 rpm record. Thissong was never released commercially, and only used for broadcast over radio stations in the 1930's. The version here came from a "Hindsight" CD compilation back in 1995, and it features great remastering from the original 16-inch, 33 1/3 rpm, vertical cut transcription records recorded in 1935. The one problem I found in the sound was a slight echo added between left and right channels to try to get a "psuedo stereo" effect from the original mono recordings, most noticeable on headphones. I played the CD through my stereo system, using the mono control to combine the left and right channel which made for a more focused sound by canceling out the slight echo. Otherwise, this record has very good sound by 1935 recording standards. Enjoy this Big Band classic performance by Glen Gray & Casa Loma Orchestra!! Hello Mr Gregg Just by coincidence i found on "You Tube" your recording of "Undiceded" that you credited to Glen Grey (Name should be Glen Gray ) on Decca - matrix 64711. In my opinion is this an error, "Undecided" was recorded by John Kirby and his Onyx Club Boys and recorded 28 october 1938 on Decca 2216 (Matrix 64711) I totaly agree it sounds a LOT like John Kirby Now before I start getting technical about this and other 78 restorations let me tell you a bit about why I'd even attempt to do this. Im a big fan of the Big Bands to the point I've spent more than 10 years presenting "Swing Type" Radio shows showcasing top swing bands of the day (and today!) playing arrangements that are SOLID! not the same old same old "In the mood" "Sing Sing Sing" stuff oh no sir, in over 1000+ shows I've not trotted out the old "standards" but played top arrangements that you may have never heard. In doing this I would pull out old LP's and Buy loads of CD's, Now i used to get VERY VERY annoyed when I'd hear a 78 that had A LOT of "Work" on it. to the point that all the "Top End" was gone. OK it takes most of the "scratchiness" away yes i agree, but it also kills the music FULL STOP. Now when i was a lad and played 78's quite a bit, If some mad scientist offered me a device that would take away 10 say 20 percent of the surface noise I'd have paid the earth!!.. so now 20 years later why do people think that if .... + Informações

Here's a real "treat" for all lovers of big band and orchestral music. Legendary Glen Gray and his infamous "Casa Loma Orchestra" (named after a Hotel in Toronto where the initial band performed for several months in 1927) play that great old standard "Frenesi". This composition had been written by Alberto Dominguez for the marimba, but soon after its release several US Bands began to play the tune and Artie Shaw even scored a big hit with his version in 1940. Glen Gray kept on touring with his Casa Loma Orchestra until 1950, when he was forced to stop due to ill health. But in 1956, Gray went back into the recording studios and recorded a series of albums for Capitol Records, on which he paid tribute to all the big bands of the 30's and 40's. Here, Van Alexander (another great composer/arranger mainly known for his various film & TV scores) delivers an outstanding arrangement for the classic evergreen, thus enabling Gray and his "Casa Loma's" to bring us one of the best (if not THE best) instrumental versions of this great song. So, get comfortable, get yourself a refreshing drink and ...... enjoy this heavenly piece of orchestral music.
