"The Girl from Ipanema" ("Garota de Ipanema") written in 1962 by Antonio Carlos Jobim with lyrics in Portuguese by Vinicius de Moraes and in English by Norman Gimbel was recorded by Astrud Gilberto, João Gilberto and Stan Getz, in March 1963 as part of the album Getz/Gilberto, released March 1964 on the Verve label. It was released as a single, reaching number one on the Pop Standard chart and was named Record of the Year in 1965. The album won the 1965 Grammy Awards for Best Album of the Year, Best Jazz Instrumental Album - Individual or Group and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. The personel are Stan Getz - tenor saxophone, João Gilberto - guitar, vocals, Astrud Gilberto -- vocals, Antonio Carlos Jobim - piano, Sebastião Neto -- bass, and Milton Banana - drums. The version presented here is the long one from the album and is, in my opinion, superior to the shortened one which received a great deal of play on the radio during the summer of 1964. I read that Girl From Ipanema is the second most covered song in the world. "It is a song of romance, of enrapture, of happiness and of a couple of poets and wanna-be dirty old men day-dreaming about a beautiful girl," an unsigned blog states. "...the story goes that, in Ipanema, a fashionable neighbourhood against the beach in Rio de Janeiro, there was a bar called Veloso. Today this bar-cafe is called A Garôta de Ipanema. The song's composers (music by Tom Jobim and lyrics by Vinicius de Moraes) would often hang out at Veloso. They attribute the song's inspiration to one Heloísa Eneida Menezes Paes Pinto (now Helô Pinheiro), a fifteen-year-old girl living in Montenegro Street. Almost aily, she would stroll past the bar on her way to the beach, attracting the attention of regulars Jobim and Moraes. In the winter of 1962, the composers would watch her pass by. It is easy to imagine why they noticed her: Helô was a five-foot-eight-inch-tall brunette living in Rua Montenegro, and already the focus of attention of many of Veloso patrons, where she would enter to buy cigarettes (for her mother and leave to a flattering wolf-whistle soundtrack. Getz was known as "The Sound" because of his warm, lyrical tone, his prime influence being the wispy, mellow tone of his idol, Lester Young João Gilberto (born João Gilberto Prado Pereira de Oliveira on June 10, 1931 in Juazeiro, Bahia) is a Grammy Award-winning Brazilian singer and guitarist. He is credited with having created the bossa nova beat and is known as the "Father of Bossa Nova." His seminal recordings, including many songs by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes, established the new musical genre in the late 1950s. Astrud Gilberto (born March 29, 1940) is a Brazilian singer best known for her samba and bossa nova music, most famously as the vocalist on the Grammy Award-winning song "The Girl from Ipanema".
