Scene from the movie Vercingétorix (2001) In the first century bC, Strabon wrote that the Arverns had extended their domination all the way to Marseille, the Pyrénées mountains, the Ocean and the Rhine river, which demonstrates the importance of the city. Gergovia, its capital, was Vercingetorix's homeland. There, Caesar experienced a painful military defeat which almost ended his Gaulish Wars. The memory of Gergovia's location was lost with time. Relatively recently, Gergovia was placed on the Merdogne plateau by Napoleon the 3rd. The plateau overlooks to the south the city of Clermont-Ferrand. This location is still considered the official site and is visited by approximately 80000 tourists each year. A few years ago, a new thesis surfaced that received considerable media coverage in the local press and television. The thesis places Gergovia on the Clermont Hills (Côtes de Clermont), north of the town. A violent controversy ensued that involved a problem with the exploitation of a quarry in the area. Mr. Giscard d'Estaing, former French President and a local of the area, found it necessary to intervene. The parties responsible for archeology in Auvergne, in line with Christian Goudineau's thinking, have decided to minimize the importance of pinpointing the exact location of the Gergovia site, deliberately choosing to ignore the gaulish cities in favor of the valley dwellings. The 1st time i played this Historical battle i won it also but this time i recorded it for upload :) Turning Caesar's defeat into a Victory heheh. Gaius Julius Caesar's 1st defeat came during the Gallic wars in 52 BC when he besieged the Gallic stronghold of Gergovia. After taking a sieries of crushing defeats by Caesar & his legions, the Gauls, had all united under the command of the Gallic King Vercingetorix of the Avernii, who before used to fight for Caesar in the auxiliaries & was even given a horse by Caesar himself for his bravery in the field. Vercingetorix was determined to prove himself so he & his Gauls dug in on the hill stronghold of Gergovia & started fortifying it. When Caesar advanced his legions he noticed the gauls tricked him in sucking his men in & were about to turn & attack so gave the order to retreat to their position & build siege machines such as catapults but the legionaries didn't heard the order or perhaps mistook it for a charge & as a consequence the Romans lost approx 700 legionaries including some centurions.
