Unfortunately, Georgia Gibbs is most often judged by this song and she is often remembered as a "white pop" artist who covered "black r&b" music however this isn't a fair judgement of her or of her career. She has an outstanding vocal range that is best shown in her many romantic ballads and big band numbers from the 1940s and early 1950s and often turns up in her pop hits from the 1950s as well. While her A-sides tend to be more upbeat, the B-sides are very often slower love songs that show her true talent. This rings true for this record who's B-side is called "You're Wrong, All Wrong" and I've posted in my videos for you to hear (along with many of her other records). Regarding the cover songs, she has stated in several interviews that "when a record company tells you to record a song, you do it" which is understandable given the era and the industry. So before remembering her this way, try some samples of her records and your mind might get turned around about this often overlooked artist. Here are two beautiful songs by one of the most gifted and versatile singers of all times, the great Georgia Gibbs, "her nibs" in person, as she would be called! Georgia Gibbs (1919 - 2006) was most popular in the 1950's. She was born Frieda Lipschitz in Worcester, Massachusetts, of Russian Jewish immigrant parents. She revealed a natural talent for singing at a very young age. Gibbs began her professional career at the age of thirteen, and was singing in Boston's Raymor Ballroom the following year. Gibbs freelanced in the late 1930's and 1940's singing with the bands of Frankie Trumbauer, Hal Kemp, Tommy Dorsey and Artie Shaw. It was with Shaw's band that she scored her first hit, "Absent Minded Moon" (1942). In 1943, she began appearing on the popular Camel Caravan radio program, hosted by Jimmy Durante and Garry Moore (it was Moore who bestowed the famous nickname "Her Nibs, Miss Georgia Gibbs" upon her). She was a regular performer on this show until 1947. Gibbs signed with Majestic Records in 1946. During this period she also was the featured singer on tours with comedians Danny Kaye and Sid Caesar. Miss Gibbs had a natural talent for comedy as well, and worked well in support of the immensely popular Kaye. She had a big, old-fashioned voice, a good ear, a vivacious personality, and she knew how to sing from the shoulder. NOTE: The shorter become the days and longer the nights, the less and less leaves are still on branches and more of them rustle under feet on your morning way to the garage, the stronger I miss a touch of Italian sun on my skin and Italian carelessness in my heart... Suddenly, browsing thru my records I found this completely forgotten recording from 1957 -- one from the bygone collection of my elder brother. I remember how they played that song on an old Polish turntable "Bambino" (a name very a propos the song) and I -- as a 6-7 yo boy - was not allowed into my brother's room where the party was held so, I looked thru a keyhole at these girls in their Italian high-heel shoes, rustling white "organdine" bomb-like dresses and bomb-like hairdressing, thickly covered with a hairspray (in Poland it was called "a lacquer"). The hits of that year (1960? 61?) were "Arrivederci Roma", Paul Anka's "Put Your Head On My Shoulder", Brenda Lee's "I'm Sorry" and ofcourse, "It's Now Or Never" by Elvis. A constant visitor to the charts in the first half of the 1950s, Georgia Gibbs failed to leave as strong an imprint as many of her fellow stars, at least in part because of her versatility. She did ballads, straight pop, novelties, pop-jazz, cha-chas -- whatever the marketplace might take, she could adapt. In the mid-'50s she, like many other white pop singers, covered R&B hits for the pop audience. Today's she's most remembered for outselling Etta James (with a cover of "The Wallflower," renamed "Dance with Me Henry") and LaVern Baker (on "Tweedle Dee"), although this phase of her career was pretty brief. Gibbs began singing in Boston ballrooms as a teenager and made her recording debut in 1938 under her given name, Fredda Gibson. She made some recordings in the early '40s with Artie Shaw's band and by the early '50s had waxed some hits for the Coral label. She enjoyed her commercial prime, though, on Mercury, for whom she recorded hit after hit from 1951 to 1956. The tango-tinged "Kiss of Fire," which went all the way to number one in 1952, was the biggest and best of these. Here is my most FAVORITE lady in the land of amazing music, Georgia Gibbs. This LP, "Her Nibs" is on Rondo-lette records and I can not find a release date for this LP anywhere on the internet. Individually, the songs on this LP have release dates varying between 1946 and 1948 although this LP obviously isn't that old.
