The composer of over 300 titles, he has had multiple albums on the Billboard charts during the 1950s, 1960s, 1980s and 1990s. He became known for a piano technique known as Shearing's voicing, a type of double melody block chord, with an additional fifth part that doubles the melody an octave lower. Shearing's interest in classical music resulted in some performances with concert orchestras in the 1950s and 1960s, and his solos frequently draw upon the music of Debussy and, particularly, Erik Satie for inspiration. He was born blind to working class parents: his father delivered coal and his mother cleaned trains in the evening. He started to learn piano at the age of three and began formal training at Linden Lodge School for the Blind, where he spent four years. He became known for a piano technique known as Shearing's voicing, a type of double melody block chord, with an additional fifth part that doubles the melody an octave lower. Shearing's interest in classical music resulted in some performances with concert orchestras in the 1950s and 1960s, and his solos frequently draw upon the music of Debussy and, particularly, Erik Satie for inspiration. As nostalgy I decided this time to make a medley with some of the songs, which George Shearing and his Quintet used to play in the old days. It is reharmonized, arranged and played by me using a Yamaha CP300 stage piano and the Cubase sequencer for the mixing, all in my digital hobby studio. Nat stepped aside from the piano and allowed George Shearing to mimic his style of playing in this recording from December of 1961. "Let There Be Love", composed in 1939 by Lionel Rand and Ian Grant, was released as a single in the UK in early 1962 and became a hit there.. + Informações

This is a recording done ca. 1949 by Ted Heath's big band of a George Shearing arrangement. Many don't know, but around this time Heath recorded a number of heavily bop influenced work (and enjoyed doing it--and wanted to do more!); this recording being one of those. Several of the arrangements were actually supplied by later band leader Tad Dameron (including: The Nearness of You, Euphoria, So Easy, and Lyonia). This particular arrangement is very refined and shows in no uncertain terms that Shearing had great aptitude writing for larger groups. The pics. were taken on a day when we had a cold snap here in Washington state, and are all of ice formations taken along the Mountain Loup Highway behind Granite Falls.
