Gene McDaniels had some early-'60s success with a pop-flavored R&B style. Born in Kansas City, he sang in Omaha choirs during the '40s and attended the Omaha Conservatory of Music. McDaniels led his own band in the '50s, then signed with Liberty. He had a Top Ten pop and Top 20 R&B hit in 1961 with "A Hundred Pounds of Clay," but the follow-up single, "A Tower of Strength," was his biggest. It was number five on both the R&B and pop charts, and "Point of No Return" just missed each list's Top 20. He appeared in the 1962 film It's Trad, Dad, which contained his song "Another Tear Falls." McDaniels continued to record for Liberty until 1965, then switched to Atlantic in the early '70s. He scored as a writer with the composition "Feel Like Making Love," a number one pop and R&B hit for Roberta Flack in 1974. Born Eugene Booker McDaniels in Kansas City, Missouri, United States, McDaniels grew up in Omaha, Nebraska. As well as singing gospel music in church, he developed a love of jazz, and learned to play the saxophone and trumpet. Recently discovered this song and can't stop playing it! It was only released as a 7" single in 1965. Ten years later it made it's first LP appearance on the 'Very Best of Gene McDaniels' on United Artists Records (who bought out Liberty Records). No known stereo version was ever released. Eugene Daniels is at his crooning best with just a touch soul and some jazz styling on this single. Unfortunately this record got lost in the current trends of the time in pop music. Legal wranglings between Gene and Liberty Records effectively succeeded of having no chart action and having little to no airplay in the US For several years, his record company wanted him to maintain a squeaky clean wholesome image while Gene wanted to be a little more soulful with cool and subtle sexy crooning.
