He is notable as a performer of Australian traditional folk songs in an authentic style. Shearston was born in Inverell, New South Wales, the son of James Barclay Shearston. A song about conflict by one of Australia's most respected songwriters, Don Henderson, written in 1963. It was often sung at anti-Vietnam War rallies. Gary Shearston sang it in the 1960s and recorded it together with a Kath Walker song, "Must We Native Old Australians, in our Own Land Rank as Aliens".
