I wrote the Matador song in Mexico, in December, 1978. Very influenced by the atmosphere, the lyrics seemed to roll right off my tongue with amazing ease. Anything sophisticated such as references to Goya, and Barcelona came along later. The basics were all there - I knew I had a special song but never would I think it would become such a great hit internationally (but for some strange reason, it was never released as a single in the US) . For me, Matador continues my personal love and connection to "Spanish" type songs like "Spanish Town", and later "El Salvador", "Spanish Manners", "Spanish Blood" and in the future "Spanish Steps" perhaps. When I finally recorded this mysterious song, with Herb Alpert, Anton Fig, Alan Freedman, and a picture of Manet's Matador on my music stand, it flowed out perfectly. Di dit dit dit dit dit dit dit. The Answer video was directed by one of the funniest guys I know, Kevin Godley, formerly of 10CC, the fantastic British group that recorded "I'm Not In Love". We shot this in the cold British winter. Garland Jeffreys is a legendary American singer, songwriter and guitarist. His music is heady blend of rock 'n' roll, reggae, blues, soul and even hip-hop -- the original mash-up artist. He began his career performing solo in Manhattan clubs in 1966 after attending college at Syracuse University as an art major, where he befriended Lou Reed. He spent a semester abroad in Italy studying art before coming back to Manhattan to further his education at New York's Institute of Fine Arts while working with several New York bands. In 1969 he formed a group called Grinder's Switch, which released just one album - Garland Jeffreys & Grinder's Switch. Members of Grinder's Switch played on the debut solo album of another co-founder of The Velvet Underground, John Cale - Vintage Violence (1970). Garland wrote a song for this album (Fairweather Friend) and did back-up vocals for it. In 1973 Jeffreys released his own debut album entitled simply Garland Jeffreys. During the mid-70s he recorded in Jamaica and toured with reggae artists Jimmy Cliff and Toots & The Maytals, and in 1977 he released his critically acclaimed Ghost Writer. The record included Wild in the Streets, a track covered by numerous artists including The Circle Jerks, whose version has become one of the seminal songs of the skater community.
