Best known for her Grammy-winning folk hit "We'll Sing in the Sunshine," Gale Garnett has since carved out a long-lived career as a writer and actress. Gale Zoë Garnett was born in Auckland, New Zealand, on July 17, 1942; her family moved to Canada when she was 11, and she made her public singing debut in 1960. In 1964, Garnett scored a Top Five pop hit with her original composition "We'll Sing in the Sunshine," and recorded her debut album, My Kind of Folk Songs, for RCA Victor. Riding the success of "We'll Sing in the Sunshine," which won a Grammy for Best Folk Recording, Garnett continued to record through the rest of the '60s with her backing band the Gentle Reign. Toward the end of the decade, she also began appearing in feature films and on television shows, usually in supporting roles. A few years after her hit "We'll Sing in the Sunshine," New Zealander Gale Garnett formed a band called Gentle Reign; they released three albums of late-60s psychedelic pop. AN AUDIENCE WITH THE KING OF WANDS was Gale and the Reign's second album and was released on Columbia Records in 1969. Here are two of its best songs, the pop/psych single "Breaking Through" and the sensitive, acoustic Tim Buckley cover "Dolphins" (with lead vocals by Bob Ingram). If you can come across a copy of the album, also check out "That's Not the Way" and "You Could Have Been Anyone"; they're both nice tunes that, unfortunately, I couldn't fit into the video. Some background info about this excellent band, called "Gale Garnett And The Gentle Reign", from Los Angeles, CA: Before hooking up with the Gentle Reign in the late 60s, Gale Garnett had already been a successful actress and Grammy award winning solo artist, releasing six LPs on RCA between 1964-67. Her last solo album, 'Gale Garnett Sings About Flying & Rainbows & Love & Other Groovy Things' (1967), was a head-first dive into the pop-psych genre, which was the direction she would continue to follow after collaborating with the band Gentle Reign between 1968-69. The Gentle Reign had also been a moderately successful entity in its own right, issuing a self-titled LP on the Vanguard label in early 1968. Members included Michael Aragon (drums, percussion, tabla), Tony Hill (piano, organ, guitar, harpsichord, celesta), Bruce Horiuchi (guitar), Rob Fisher (bass), Paul Robinson (percussion), Dick Rosmini (acoustic guitar) and Bob Ingram (guitar). In 1968, they hooked up with Garnett (vocals, guitar, kazoo) and were signed to Columbia where they released two LPs as Gail Garnett And The Gentle Reign. The first album issued, 'An Audience With The King Of Wands' (1968), makes a strong attempt at psychedelia, but contains several jumbled music styles which unfortunately give it a rather sketchy vibe. Highlights however include the Garnett penned 'Breaking Through' and an outstanding cover of Fred Neil's 'Dolphins'.
