Frank Bridge: Three Songs for Mezzo-Soprano, Viola, and Piano (1907) 12.33 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 9430 exibições Rebecca Ringle, Mezzo-Soprano Luke Fleming, Viola, Roger Steptoe, Piano Three Songs for Mezzo-Soprano, Viola, and Piano (1907) Frank Bridge (1879 -- 1941) I. Far, far from each other Matthew Arnold (1822 -- 1888) Far, far from each other our spirits have flown, And what heart knows another? Ah! Who knows his own? Blow, ye winds! Lift me with you! I come to the wild. Fold closely, O nature! Thine arms round thy child. Ah, calm me! Restore me and dry up my tears. On thy high mountain platforms, where morn first appears. II. Where is it that our soul doth go? Heinrich Heine (1797 -- 1856), trans. KF Kroeker One thing I'd know, When we have perished, Where is it that our soul doth go? Where, where is the fire, that is extinguished? Where is the wind? Where is the wind but now did blow? Where is it? Where is it? Where is it that our soul doth go? When we have perished. III. Music, when soft voices die Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792 -- 1822) Music, when soft voices die, Vibrates in the memory. Odours, when sweet violets sicken, Live within the sense they quicken. Rose leaves, when the rose is dead, Are heaped for the belovèd's bed. And so my thoughts when thou art gone, Love itself shall slumber on.. + Informações |

Frank Bridge - from Hamlet: There is a willow grows aslant a brook 9.78 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 4494 exibições Frank Bridge (1879-1941) There is a willow grows aslant a brook; Impression for small orchestra (from Hamlet by William Shakespeare) English String Orchestra conducted by William Boughton There is a willow grows aslant a brook, That shows his hoar leaves in the glassy stream; There with fantastic garlands did she come Of crowflowers, nettles, daisies, and long purples, That liberal shepherds give a grosser name, But our cold maids do dead men's fingers call them. There, on the pendant boughs her coronet weeds Clamb'ring to hang, an envious sliver broke; When down her weedy trophies and herself Fell in the weeping brook. Her clothes spread wide; And, mermaid-like, awhile they bore her up; Which time she chaunted snatches of old tunes; As one incapable of her own distress, Or like a creature native and indu'd Unto that element: but long it could not be Till that her garments, heavy with their drink, Pull'd the poor wretch from her melodious lay To muddy death.. + Informações |

Frank Bridge - Lament (1915) 4.93 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 3454 exibições Frank Bridge (1879-1941) Lament for piano, arranged for string orchestra (1915) English String Orchestra conducted by William Boughton Frank Bridge's early works follow in the late-Romantic tradition of Brahms; but then, partly triggered by his abhorrence of the horrors of the First World War, his music became troubled, intense and chromatic until it rubbed shoulders with the European avant-garde, such as Berg. This later style is foreshadowed by the short Lament for strings composed in a day in response to a tragic victim of the war. The dedication is poignant in its terseness: 'To Catherine, aged 9, Lusitania 1915', and in a mere five minutes Bridge creates a threnody of stark intensity.. + Informações |

Frank Bridge (1879-1941) : Summer, symphonic poem (1914) 10.88 min. Citons les suites « Fairy Tale » (1917) et « The Hour Glass » (1920), la rhapsodie « Enter Spring » (1927), le poème symphonique « There is a Willow Grows Aslant a Brook, Impression for Small orchestra » (1927), une « Phantasm Rhapsody, for piano and orchestra » (1931) ainsi que « A Royal Night of Variety, Epilog for orchestra » (1934). On peut aussi apprécier sur collectionCB sa vigoureuse « Dance Rhapsody » (1908). Peter Pears sings two songs by Frank Bridge 2.95 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 3982 exibições Peter Pears accompanied by Benjamin Britten perform two songs by Britten's teacher Frank Bridge: 'Go not, happy day' and 'Love went a-riding' When the 10" LP was released in 1956, the reviewer of Gramophone wrote: "A well-chosen anthology of British twentieth-century song, very well performed. The recital opens and closes with a composition of Frank Bridge: Britten pays tribute to his admired teacher. In 'Go not, happy day' (words by Tennyson) and 'Love went a-riding' (words by Mary Coleridge) both pianist and singer are buoyant and bright. The full text of the poems is: Go not, happy day, From the shining fields, Go not, happy day, Till the maiden yields. Rosy is the West, Rosy is the South, Roses are her cheeks, And a rose her mouth When the happy Yes Falters from her lips, Pass and blush the news Over glowing ships; Over blowing seas, Over seas at rest, Pass the happy news, Blush it thro' the West; Till the red man dance By his red cedar-tree, And the red man's babe Leap, beyond the sea. Blush from West to East, Blush from East to West, Till the West is East, Blush it thro' the West. Rosy is the West, Rosy is the South, Roses are her cheeks, And a rose her mouth. (Alfred, Lord Tennyson) Love went a-riding over the earth, On Pegasus he rode . . . The flowers before him sprang to birth, And the frozen rivers flowed. Than all the youths and the maidens cried, "Stay here with us, King of Kings!" But Love said, "No! for the horse I ride, For the horse I ride has wings .... + Informações |
