Years before the Flying Tigers - American Volunteer Group, the original American Volunteer Group consisting of 13 Chinese-American aviators joined their native Chinese Air Force counterparts in the mid-1930's in the preparation for imminent war with Imperial Japan. Ace fighter pilots Kao Chih-hang, Liu Tsui-kang, Arthur Chin, Li Kuei-tan, John "Buffalo" Wong, Liu Che-sheng, Le Yiqin, Lu Jichun, Chen Huamin have 54 confirmed kills between them. China's principle fighter aircraft at the time was the locally manufactured Curtiss Hawk III and Boeing P-26C-281. These were slightly less performance than the Imperial Japanese Navy's Mitsubishi A5M Claudes (predecessor of the infamous Mitsubishi A6M Zero-sen Fighter aircraft) and the Imperial Army's Nakajima Ki-27, but the Chinese aircraft were significantly more rugged. This was important for the Chinese pilots, as any Chinese pilot observed escaping combat are subject to the death penalty by firing squad, unlike the British/western pilots, whom only face court-martial. Later pilots of the AVG Flying Tigers had the benefit of even more rugged and armoured Curtis P-40 Warhawks heavily armed with six 50-caliber machine guns and permission to use only high-speed hit and run tactics against the nimble Imperial Japanese fighters, as dog-fights against the lighter-weight Japanese fighter aircraft oftenly proved fatal. The pilots were United States Army (USAAF), Navy (USN), and Marine Corps (USMC) personnel, recruited under Presidential sanction and commanded by Claire Lee Chennault; the ground crew and headquarters staff were likewise mostly recruited from the US military, along with some civilians. The group consisted of three fighter squadrons with about 20 aircraft each. It trained in Burma before the American entry into World War II with the mission of defending China against Japanese forces. Arguably, the group was a private military contractor, and for that reason the volunteers have sometimes been called mercenaries. The members of the group had lucrative contracts with salaries ranging from $250 a month for a mechanic to $750 for a squadron commander, roughly three times what they had been making in the US forces. Video of my Flying Tiger performing its routine. I purchased this from an estate sale and it was in very poor condition. Batteries had been left inside and had leaked causing quite some internal damage. All mechanical parts needed fixing. The toy plane was stripped down completely and rebuilt using all original parts except for a new wiring harness. It took me about a month to painstakingly repair this gem. I ended up selling it on eBay to a gentleman in Britain.. + Informações
