This lesson extends what we have been learning about the E chord and introduces the E Run which is a version of the G Run played out of E position. In addition we cover basic dynamics (using the guitar as a tool to fill in the gaps created by phrasing in vocals and pauses between verses and choruses). Earl was the innovator of the famous 3 finger Bluegrass style. He first played with Bill Monroe in the mid forties, and then joined up with Lester Flatt to form the Foggy Mountain Boys. The rest is history. I saw Flatt and Scruggs live on several occasions. Earl, in his eighties, is still performing today. I think he should be honored for innovation in American music, right along with Bill Monroe. One of the greatest instrumentals ever recorded. The 1949 recording was used in the movie Bonnie and Clyde and then re-recorded after the film. The original version, in my opinion, was far superior to the more familier version that most people know and play today. It's faster, there were no breaks and the noting was more complicated. Earl Scruggs is the great innovator and master of the 5-string banjo; but many do not know that he was (is) also excellent on the guitar. This song, Jimmy Brown the Newsboy, features Earl on lead guitar. Earl said that he learned a lot about guitar from his friend and neighbor, Mama Maybelle Carter. This is my favorite bluegrass band of all time. This is rare footage of a USO show (for the military) some time in the 60's. This video shows Hylo Brown playing bass w/ the rest of the standard F&S line up: Paul Warren on fiddle, Earl and Lester on banjo and guitar respectively, Curly Seckler on mandolin, and Josh Graves on dobro.
