(Filmed in October 2000) NOTES: from Filming in Ireland, www.maireid.com We went on to Ennis, which is known as Ireland's Information Technology Town. In a unique government experiment, all of the residents of Ennis within a five-mile radius of the town were given free or subsidized computer equipment and DSL online access, in the mid-1990s. At one of the local national schools in Ennis, we filmed Siobhan Peoples (daughter of celebrated Irish fiddler, Tommy Peoples) while she taught her fiddle class, as part of the Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann music program. Josephine Marsh, the celebrated accordion player, met us there after Siobhan's class and together they led us up to the Drumore Nature Reserve, several miles out of Ennis. The afternoon sun was warm as it sparkled on the water and illuminated the autumn leaves. Water birds sang, glided and swooped all around us. An old raised cement walkway lined with overarching sapling trees bridged the wide, deep lake to castle ruins on the other side. I nearly fainted to see Siobhan and Josephine perched precariously on the edge of the walkway, playing their precious instruments, with feet dangling and dancing over the dark water. Meanwhile, Joe, one buttock suspended over the water and the other providing ballast on terra firma, leaned his camera out to film them from an impossible angle. A road trip to Trona Pinnacles, Ballarat, and Barker Ranch on 3/29/08. The Trona Pinnacles are located just south of the town of Trona. They are products of calcium carbonate that had bonded to algae in a prehistoric lake. As the lake evaporated the pinnacles formed. Because of their unique appearance the Trona Pinnacles have served as a backdrop for a number of sci-fi movies including Planet of the Apes, The Gate II, Lost in Space, and Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. Ballarat is about 20-30 miles North of Trona. Ballarat is a ghost town that was occupied for only about 20 years. Only Rock Novak and his dog permanently reside there these days. Ballarat was victim to graffiti by the Manson Family as they passed through on their way to Barker Ranch. Charlie's power truck still resides in Ballarat along with it's stars painted on the inside of the roof courtesy of the family. Barker Ranch is about 15-20 miles south of Ballarat nestled five miles into the Panamint Mountains. The only access is a dirt/rock road and to enter the mountains you must have a 4wd vehicle with a clearance of ~9 inches. Manson and the family were found in Barker Ranch shortly after their Tate / La Bianca killing spree. The police were actually looking for car thieves and were surprised to find a group of murderers. Skanda Vale is a Hindu Temple/Monastery in the county of Carmarthenshire, south-west Wales. The temple is dedicated to Lord Subramanya, who is also known as Skanda, Karttikeya, and Muruga. Skanda Vale is located in the valleys of West Wales, about five miles from the town of Carmarthen, on the way to Lampeter, the nearest village is Llanpumsaint. The road to the temple is very narrow, allowing just one vehicle to pass at a time. There are three temples: The Murugan Temple, The Maha Shakthi Temple, and the Ranganatha Temple. There is a daily puja at each temple, and many monks live near the temple. There are overnight facilities for people travelling from a long distance. The Community of the Many Names of God was founded on the worship of God in his universality, in accordance with the spiritual teachings of Lord Krishna as in the Bhagavad-Gita. It was established as a monastic centre in Wales in 1973. The present 115 acre site was originally three adjacent farms and a small block of woodland, which were separately purchased and amalgamated by the community as the grounds of Skanda Vale Monastery. Its first temple, dedicated to Lord Subramanya, was registered as a place of public worship in 1975. A variety of animals are kept on the grounds of the temple including an elephant. There has been controversy since April 2007, when their sacred bullock, Shambo, tested positive for bovine TB, and the government ruled that he had to be destroyed. This Video was shot by my friend Tony Johnson on May 24, 1991 and here is the story on this video in his words. "I as filming UP action there when I head this westbound approach with a sick horn. Right after the engineer blows for the road crossing, the dynamic brakes on UP3582 blows sky high with a loud bang. In the video I said "it looks like it blew it's turdocharger", but as UP3582 rolled past me I could see a hole and fire inside the dynamic brake grid with sparks and molten metal falling onto the walkway. I mentioned that I thought the crew would call the fire department, but they didn't. I drove two miles itto Cozad and found the same UP local switching a local customer as if nothing had happen. the fire was out and the unit sounded normal. At the time UP were running their trains like streetcars on the double track mainline. I was surprised when the UP dispatcher allowed the local to get back on the main line and continue west, which i also photographed.
