LINK: tinyurl.com He was born on December 3, 1925 on a farm that was located equally close to Flat River, Hickory Grove and Cantwell, Missouri, just about 75 miles from St. Louis. As a young boy he wanted to become a singer and make records, maybe even appearing on the Grand Ole Opry. There is a story that says he (or his father) traded a hen with a neighbor in exchange for a guitar. The deal was cancelled, however, when the hen failed to lay any eggs! Nevertheless, he did learn to play guitar, doing so locally at church functions and amateur competitions. These dreams, however, had to wait until after he served his country in World War II. After serving five years in the Merchant Marines, Ferlin returned home in 1947 to Missouri where he went to work with Smiley Burnette on St. Louis radio station KXLW. Eventually, he ended up in Salinas, California, performing with local performer/radio personality Big Jim DeNoone. Ferlin Husky's first recordings were done for Bill McCall's Four Star Records. Under the name "Terry Preston," he recorded his first single, "Remembrance of Franklin D/Ozark Waltz". Eight more singles were to follow on this label. In 1951, he was added to the cast of Cliffie Stone's TV program "Hometown Jamboree," replacing Tennessee Ernie Ford. Stone was so impressed by Ferlin's talent .... + Informações

While growing up, one of the country artists I got to hear a lot of was Ferlin Husky. Granted, it was mainly his big hits such as "Gone" or "Wings Of A Dove", so it's always nice to dig into his musical catalog and find something that hasn't been heard in a while. Here's a #37 hit of his from 1967 that's a good one!. + Informações

It's been ages since I've added anything by Ferlin, so when I got his 1973 "Sweet Honky Tonk" album recently, I figured the title track would be a good addition. I can't really make heads or tails of his outfit on the cover, but I guess I'm picky like that. :). + Informações

Ferlin Husky had three separate careers. Out of the three, the best-known is his country-pop career, which brought him to the top of the charts in the late '50s, but he was also known as a honky tonk singer called Terry Preston and a country comic named Simon Crum. Of course, Preston and Crum are just footnotes to Husky's very popular career, even though Crum nearly became a household name as well. During the late '50s and early '60s, he had a string of Top 40 country hits, highlighted by two number one hits -- "Gone" and "Wings of a Dove" -- which each spent ten weeks at the top of the charts. Husky wasn't able to sustain that momentum, but both of the songs became country classics. Born and raised outside on a Missouri farm, Husky became infatuated with music and began to play guitar as a child. During World War II, he enlisted in the Merchant Marines, where he occasionally entertained the troops onboard his ship. Following the war, he became a DJ in Missouri, then in Bakersfield, CA. While he was in California, Husky began using the name Terry Preston, because he believed his given name sounded too rural. He also began singing in honky tonks, using the Preston name. At one of his gigs, Tennessee Ernie Ford's manager Cliffie Stone heard Husky and took him under his wing. Stone helped Husky secure a record contract at Capitol Records in 1953. As soon as he signed with Capitol, he reverted to using Ferlin Husky as his performing name. Husky's first records were generally .... + Informações

A recent inductee into the Country Music Hall Of Fame, Ferlin was born in Flat River, Mo, and entered the Merchant Marines during WW2 where his ship took part in the D-Day invasion of Cherbourg. Upon discharge from the service, he went into the entertainment business, first as a disc jockey, using other names like Terry Preston and Simon Crum. When he signed a recording contract with Capitol Records, they convinced him to revert to his given name of Ferlin Husky. "Gone" was the song that started his career, crossing over to the pop charts peaking at #4 in March of 1957.. + Informações
