My Copperband Butterfly feeding with my other fish in quarantine. He loves the frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp and freshwater clams. My advise to anybody having problems with their copperband butterfly not eating- start with dropping in a cracked open, freshwater clam. After about two of those a day, drop in some thawed-out frozen bloodworms. Mine goes crazy for those foods. He's always cruizing at the top of the tank when he sees me and waits for the food drop. FULL VIEW PLEASE! One of the first things I noticed when I moved to my new house was that there were Four O'Clock bushes growing every where. Four O'clocks get their names because the flowers open in the evening after four PM. They can also open on cloudy or rainy days early. It's a nocturnal flower with a wonderful scent that attracts night time pollinators, namely sphinx moths. I've never been a fan of butterflies but I adore sphinx moths because they look like little hummingbirds. They don't fly like butterflies either, they can hover and are pretty big. They have long a long probosis (tongue) for reaching into trumpet shaped flowers. Some as you will see are amzingly long. I loved handfeeding them with the hummingbird feeder. They just drink and drink until they are so full they can't fly and have to land. They really get drunk off the nectar. With each flower they only get a few drops but with the feeder they aren't used to bottomless drinks. It's so fun and you can walk while they hover in place. They have amazing precision controls. The species in this video are The Five spotted Hawkmoth - Manduca quinquemaculata Banded Sphinx Moth - Eumorpha fasciatus pink spotted hawkmoth - Agrius cingulata Note that the Five Spotted is the infamous Tobacco Hornworm caterpillar that eats tomatoes and peppers. This movie shows the complete eclosion of a Monarch butterfly from the chrysalis. As the butterfly pumps blood into the wings, the wings elongate as the body become smaller. The front legs, which do not look like legs at all, pat the proboscis. When the butterfly comes out of the chrysalis, the proboscis is in two parts. The butterfly continues to pat it until the two parts are completely connected. This monarch happens to be a male. You can tell because on its hindwings, there is a smudge on one of its veins. Kids can use this butterfly unit to investigate changes in their own lives. The caterpillar (or larva) is the long, worm-like stage of the butterfly or moth. The Butterfly Habitat is a miniature tropical rainforest that resembles the native home of various butterfly species imported from around the globe to this facility, that's 500 individual butterflies housed on average including the Blue Morpho Butterfly as seen here. The underside of thier wings (seen when closed) is colored brown with black imperfections to resemble a wooden disguise while on tree branches, but when flying or hovering over a flower to feed here the bright royal blue color of the topside of thier wings can be seen.
