The Broken Window Fallacy 3.15 min. | 4.859362 avaliação | 177997 exibições Students, get a full week of this at a summer seminar: lrnlbty.co Does destruction create jobs? After natural disasters, terrorist attacks, and wars, some people argue that these disasters are good for the economy, because they create jobs and prosperity. As Prof. Art Carden of Rhodes College explains, this is an example of the "broken window fallacy," a term coined by Frederic Bastiat. When a shopkeeper's window is broken, he will spend money on a new window, which gives income and jobs for glaziers. This activity is "seen," but the "unseen" is just as important: the money spend on a new window could have been spent on other things. Wealth has not increase, but only reallocated from some people to others, and society is worse off by one window. Watch more videos: lrnlbty.co. + Informações |

The Ad Hominem Fallacy 10.53 min. | 4.939394 avaliação | 10451 exibições www.criticalthinkeracademy.com This is a sample video in a video tutorial series on fallacies, which you can find at www.criticalthinkeracademy.com. You can find the full series at the link above. One thing to remember about the ad hominem is that merely insulting someone doesn't make you guilty of this fallacy. Saying "you're an idiot" may be rude, but it doesn't commit a fallacy unless the implication is that we should reject your argument because you're an idiot, and only because you're an idiot. And even then there can be exceptions (see the video).. + Informações |

The Most Persistent Economic Fallacy of All Time! 2.87 min. | 4.7305093 avaliação | 188561 exibições From a lecture given by Dr. Milton Friedman in Erie, Pennsylvania (1978). This is essentially a restatement of the "parable of the broken window." This fallacy has been known since at least 1850 when French theorist Frédéric Bastiat published a pamphlet entitled, "That Which is Seen and That Which is Not Seen." You can read it here: bastiat.org It was popularized in 1946 by economist Henry Hazlitt in an important book called, "Economics in One Lesson." According to economist Walter Block, the book was instrumental in converting him from communism to capitalism. (Incidentally, Block's book "Defending the Undefendable" was instrumental in converting John Stossel to libertarianism.) It can be downloaded for free from the Foundation for Economic Education here: www.fee.org Download "Defending the Undefendable" by Walter Block here: mises.org John Stossel has a nice little video of this fallacy under the guise of so-called "green jobs." Watch it here: www.youtube.com Stossel also has a great article about this fallacy under yet another guise known as "Cash for Clunkers." Read it here: www.realclearpolitics.com From The Boston Globe (1 Sep. 10): "...the supply of used cars is artificially low, because your Uncle Sam decided last year to destroy hundreds of thousands of perfectly good automobiles as part of its hare-brained Car Allowance Rebate System ? or, as most of us called it, Cash for Clunkers. That was the program under which the government paid consumers up to $4500 when .... + Informações |

It sounds good, but its nonsense. I have a new video column up on my webpage on that. The bottom line: If green jobs are a good idea, they will just happen.
