Kim Lorentzen Provides a Tour of Lancair's Redmond Facility As composite structures began to emerge in the late 1970s, Lance Neibauer's aviation interest quickly went from hobby to inspiration; having graduated with a BFA in Graphic Design, Neibauer believed he could develop a sleekly designed aircraft that optimized both performance and handling. The resulting Lancair 200 made its aviation debut in 1984, premiering for Oshkosh attendees the following year. Exhibiting such advancement, the Lancair 200 is now displayed at the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Museum in Oshkosh, WI. The Lancair team became synonymous with innovative aircraft, including the Lancair 320/360, whose unprecedented design and beauty earned a display place at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 1993, Neibauer launched Pacific Aviation Composites USA (later renamed 'Columbia Aircraft'), eventually developing the type-certificated, piston single-engine Columbia 300. The fourth BMW Art Car was created in 1977 by the Pop Art legend Andy Warhol who, unlike the previous artists, worked directly on the full-scale vehicle and painted the car himself. For Andy Warhol to paint an automobile seems a natural. His studio was known as a factory and his greatest fame came from portraying Campbell's Soup cans. Warhol explained the sweeping strokes of his car, "I tried to portray speed pictorially. If a car is moving really quickly, all the lines and colors are blurred." All previous Art Car artists created their designs on 1:5 scale models, called maquettes, and had technicians reproduce their designs on the real cars. Warhol insisted on painting the real M1 himself. He is reported to have spent all of 23 minutes painting the car. He ran his fingers through the paint to leave a personal touch. When asked if he was pleased with the end result, he replied, "I love the car; it's better than the work of art itself." The car raced only once, in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1979, driven by Manfred Winkelhock (Germany) and the Frenchmen Hervé Poulain and Marcel Mignot. It placed sixth overall and second in class. Redemption for the Tapco Mini-14 magazine! As I had stated in my June 2010 criticisms of the Gen 1 magazine, I had complete confidence that Tapco would correct the issues. Collaborating directly with Tapco, the is the result. Welcome to the best magazine in the world for the Mini-14: Tapco GEN 2s. The best improvement is the steel lug strapped that I had called for in my initial review. It's a now a reality! This provides excellent durability and gives a rock solid lockup equal to that of the Ruger factory steel Mini-14 mags. Improved and more rigid polymers, feed lips, and body are also part of the Gen 2 makeup. And they only weigh 5.2 ounces, almost half that of the still excellent but brick-heavy 9.0 ounce factory 30 rounders! A minor downside still persists: these still don't like steel cased ammunition and hiccups will occur with it. Perhaps for most guys, this isn't a big deal as brass is used for more serious work. But with brass ammunition in 100s of rounds fired (shown), this Gen 2 Tapco mag rules the roost. Tapco Product Manager and his team are to be congratulated for seeing this project through, listening to the TNP audience, and thus created a work of art feeding device for the Mini-14.
