THE ROYAL SCOTS (THE ROYAL REGIMENT) The Royal Charter which raised The Royal Scots (The Royal Regiment) was given by King Charles 1st in 1633 making it, without dispute, the oldest regular Regiment of Infantry in the British Army. Prior to the granting of the Royal Charter, the Regiment did exists and its traces its ancestry to those many Scottish Units who, from medieval times, fought in the service of the Kings of France, Bohemia, Holland, Denmark and Sweden. The nickname of Pontius Pilates Bodyguard traditionally dates from 1643, when considerable rivalry existed between the French Regiment of Picardy (now the First Regiment of the Line of the French Army) and Douglass Regiment (the then title of the Royal Scots), on the subject of precedence. In 340 years of soldiering, the Regiment has been awarded 136 Battle Honours from Tangier in 1680-84 to Burma (1939-45). The Regiment is allied, or affiliated, to the Canadian Scottish Regiment (1927), 10th (Princess Marys Own) Gurkha Rifles and the Royal Newfoundland Regiment (1957). Over the years a very close association has developed between the Regiments and its Recruiting Area comprising the City of Edinburgh, The Lothians and Peebleshire. The Simon Park Orchestra is a group which is most notable for producing the instrumental, "Eye Level", which spent four weeks at the number 1 position in the UK Singles Chart in September 1973. Eye Level" was produced originally for the De Wolfe Music Library and selected by Thames Television to be the theme tune for their Netherlands based detective series, Van der Valk. The work was based on a Dutch nursery rhyme which Jack Trombey wrote a top line for, and Simon Park arranged for his own orchestra and conducted. The track was fully entitled "Eye Level (Theme from the TV series 'Van Der Valk'). The song based on the music, with suitable lyrics added was called "And You Smiled", and was performed by Matt Monro. The tune became popular with audiences and, in a move which was unusual at the time for both library works and television themes, Columbia Records issued it on a single (catalogue number DB 8946) with the theme to Granada Television's drama series Crown Court, entitled "Distant Hills", on the b-side. The record entered the UK chart and spent 22 weeks in the Top 40, four of them at number one. Total sales were 1005500, gaining the award of a gold disc. In the US, it was used as theme music in 1970s TV and radio commercials for KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. It was also used for TV adverts for Alton Towers, in its pre-Lunar Park mode of gardens, fronted by Frank Muir and in the 1980s for Oranjeboom lager using "tulips" for "your lips" as "wrap tulips around a pint today .... + Informações

The Simon Park Orchestra produced music for the De Wolfe Music Library amongst others, and 'Eye Level' was selected as a theme tune in 1973 for the popular Van der Valk series, set in Amsterdam and produced by Thames Television (which closed in 1992). An associate of the Simon Park Orchestra, Jack Trombey (real name Jan Stoeckart), was a distant relative of our drummer Hot Stix (not his real name either) and from Trombey, Stix developed his love of goats. Trombey wrote the hook for Park's arrangement: without that top line, nicknamed 'the Hook of Holland' in the business, Eye Level may never have sold over 1 million pressings. Stix insisted on Van Credenza covering this number as a tribute to Stoeckart, many of whose tunes are familiar to you, but uncredited. This is because Stoeckart, like Van Credenza, produced music for stock use, and he also used many aliases.. + Informações
