"Tuxedo Junction", performed by Erskine Hawkins & His Orchestra, on RCA Victor Bluebird Label. This record is being played on my 1946 Capitol Phonograph (Model No. D-17). Erskine Hawkins' most successful and well known chart topper was Tuxedo Junction. Erskine Hawkins, nicknamed The 20th Century Gabriel, was a great jazz trumpet player, band leader, and songwriter who grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. The Glenn Miller recording of "Tuxedo Junction" made it to the number 1 Billboard Magazine spot in 1940. Erskine Hawkins recording made it to Billboards Number 7 spot in 1940 as well. Erskine Hawkins & His Orchestra began performing in 1934 and by 1938 were quite successful. The Erskine Hawkins Orchestra stayed together until 1953. The jazz and blues nightclub which helped inspire the writing of the song, known as the Nixon building (built in 1922), still stands today in Ensley which is now a part of Birmingham. This phonograph was purchased by my Dad from Gabberts, a tire and appliance store in downtown Minneapolis in 1946 or 1947 (Gabberts would later change to a general home furnishings shop seven years later). This phonograph was one of my Dads first major appliance purchases after having served with the Marine Corps in World War II. My Dad gave this phonograph to his parents a few years later, which helped serve to entertain them into the mid 1970s on their farm in Hinckley, Minnesota. Superb footage of the Erskine Hawkins band with an unknown title. Can anyone identify it? "Yvesfrancois" points out that the title of this number is "Swinging In Harlem". To my great delight Paul Bascomb jr. informed me that it is his father on sax and his uncle Dud "Wilbur" Bascomb on trumpet.. + Informações

A nice swingin' tune from Erskine Hawkins and His Orchestra. A talented high-note trumpeter and a popular bandleader, Erskine Hawkins was nicknamed "the 20th Century Gabriel." He learned drums and trombone before switching to trumpet when he was 13. While attending the Alabama State Teachers College, he became the leader of the college band, the 'Bama State Collegians. They went to New York in 1934, became the Erskine Hawkins Orchestra, started making records in 1936, and by 1938 were quite successful. With Hawkins and Dud Bascomb sharing the trumpet solos, Paul Bascomb or Julian Dash heard on tenors, Haywood Henry on baritone, and pianist Avery Parrish, this was a solidly swinging band that delighted dancers and jazz fans alike. Hawkins had three major hits ("Tuxedo Junction," "After Hours," and "Tippin' In") and was able to keep the big band together all the way until 1953; some of their later sessions were more R&B-oriented yet never without jazz interest. They were considered the best of the college's three dance bands, the other two being the Cavaliers and the Revellers. Starting in 1929, the Collegians were sent on the road to raise funds at a time when the college was in danger of being closed due to the Depression. A number of musicians from the Collegians later had successful careers with the large swing orchestras of the day. In addition to composer and bandleader Erskine Hawkins, these included Paul Bascomb, Dud Bascomb, Avery Parrish, Julian Dash, Reuben Phillips, and Sammy Lowe. In 1934, Erskine Hawkins and the Collegians traveled to New York, and Hawkins played at the Apollo. "St. Louis Blues", performed by Erskine Hawkins & His Orchestra. From the RCA three (3) record album set "Erskine Hawkins Plays WC Handy". RCA released this 45 rpm album set around 1949 / 50. The session was recorded around 1940. RCA publicly released the 45 rpm phonograph and record in 1949 (RCA made reference to the project as "Madame X" during its development). The RCA Victor phonograph Model 45-EY-2 shown here, began production in 1950 and continued through 1954. It underwent a minor facelift in 1955 with the model number changed to Model 6-EY-1. Hawkins was a great jazz trumpet player, band leader, and songwriter who grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. Of all the charts he had written "Tuxedo Junction" was probably his most famous. The Glenn Miller recording of Tuxedo Junction made it to the number 1 Billboard Magazine spot in 1940. Erskine Hawkins' recording made it to Billboard's Number 7 spot in 1940 as well.
