Eric Coates: " On the edge of the Lake " ( Isla of the Waters ), from 'Summer Days' suite 3.77 min. | 4.9411764 avaliação | 3021 exibições Eric Coates (1886-1957) was a well-known British composer of light music, whose orchestral suites (such as 'London', 'London Again', 'The Three Elizabeths') were enormously popular in the 1930s and 1940s, and are still regularly heard today. Most of his orchestral music was issued in piano solo versions, some made by Coates himself. These piano versions have never made it into the piano repertoire - even though many were sold as suites for piano without mentioning the orchestral derivation. I think this is because - either owing to Coates' orchestrations, or the arrangers' shortcomings - the arrangements of the uptempo items (often waltzes and marches) are very routine and unimaginative and more suited to the ballet school than the concert hall. However some of the more reflective movements - like this one - work well on piano. The 'Summer Days' suite was written in 1918 and dedicated to Alexander Morvaren ('Alick') Maclean (1872-1936), conductor of the New Queens Hall Light Orchestra. This movement - also known as ' By the edge of the Lake ' - has a subtle Scottish flavour. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Played by Phillip Sear www.psear.co.uk. + Informações |

Thomas Allen - I Heard You Singing - Eric Coates 2.95 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 2597 exibições I heard you singing when the dawn was grey And silver dew on ev'ry blossom lay; Though the rising sun too soon drank up the dew, I thought I heard you singing all the long day through. I heard you singing in the silent hour When evening came with sleep for bird and flow'r; A song like happy murmuring of woodland streams, I thought I heard you singing down the vale of dreams. Beloved, when the last call echoes clear, And I must part from all that is so dear, I shall not fear the valley that before me lies, If I may hear you singing as I close my eyes.. + Informações |

The Alfred(o) Campoli Grand Orchestra - Eric Coates Medly 8.48 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 203 exibições London Bridge - I Pitched My Lonely Caravan -- Knightsbridge - I Heard You Singing - The Three Bears - Sleepy Lagoon - Jester At The Wedding - Bird Songs At Eventide Recorded in 1934. Found at The AHRC Research Centre for the History and Analysis of Recorded Music (CHARM) was established on 1 April 2004, supported by a 5-year grant of just under £1m from the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Alfredo Campoli was born in Rome in 1906, both his parents being professional musicians. In 1911 the family moved to London, where Campoli was taught by his father, and by the time of his Wigmore Hall début in 1923, he was already secure in 11 major concertos. Although he subsequently toured with Melba and Clara Butt, Campoli turned his attention to light music, and during the 1930s became a household name for his many recordings and broadcasts, especially with his Salon Orchestra. Usually billed only under his surname, he also maintained a concert career, and played Paganini's Concerto in D (arranged by Kreisler) at a Promenade Concert in 1937. After the Second World War he returned to the "serious" classics, and soon established an international reputation. He made his American début at Carnegie Hall in 1953 and visited Russia twice in 1956, on the second occasion with the LPO. Campoli's large repertoire, and included the major Classical and Romantic works as well as works by Moeran, Ireland, Bax and Walton; in 1955 he gave the first performance of Bliss's Violin Concerto, which .... + Informações |

Eric Coates - Calling All Workers 3.88 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 4071 exibições The famous signature tune to the popular BBC Radio programme "Music While You Work" which was broadcast between 1940 and 1967. The programme itself consisted of a variety of bright cheery music from different bands and instrument ensembles which would have been playing out on the factory floor to boost the morale of the British workforce, particularly during the second World War. Here I am playing my own arrangement of this piece, adapted from the piano score for organ.. + Informações |

Eric Coates conducts Jack Payne & His Band. 1932. 4.03 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 3604 exibições "Bird Songs At Eventide" (Eric Coates). Jack Payne & His Band.1932 This is a 12" Imperial Concert Arrangement of Eric Coates' "Birdsongs at Eventide". The label reads; 'conducted by the composer, Eric Coates'. Eric Coates (1886-1957) is perhaps best remembered for his famous 'Knightsbridge March' (1933) from his 'London Suite' which was used by the BBC as it's signature tune to the popular Saturday night programme 'In Town Tonight' from 1933 onwards. His Other works include 'The Sleepy lagoon' (1939) and 'The Dam Busters March' (1942). Billy Scott-Coomber provides a lovely, sweet vocal here. This was recorded at one of Jack Paynes first sessions for the Crystalate record company on March 10th 1932. I think this is a recording of great versatility on the Band's part, showing just how varied a programme the 1930's bands were capable of presenting. This is just the thing for a new Springtime evening!.. + Informações |

Eric Coates: ' Intermezzo (PM B) ' from 'Miniature Suite' 2.98 min. | 4.8 avaliação | 1376 exibições Eric Coates (1886-1957) was a well-known British composer of light music, whose orchestral suites (such as 'London', 'London Again', 'The Three Elizabeths') were enormously popular in the 1930s and 1940s, and are still regularly heard today. Most of his orchestral music was issued in piano solo versions, and this suite was arranged by Coates himself. These piano versions have never made it into the piano repertoire - even though many were sold as suites for piano (this one is described as an arrangement from the orchestral score). The early 'Miniature Suite' was premiered by Sir Henry Wood (the dedicatee) at a Promenade Concert in 1911. However, the 'PMB' of the title of the Intermezzo reveals the 'real' dedicatee of the Intermezzo - the 16 year-old Phyllis Black, whom Coates had met that year and fallen for, and whom he married in 1913. I have seen the movement described as showing the influence of Elgar, but to me it is far more in the style of Edward German. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Played by Phillip Sear www.psear.co.uk. + Informações |

Eric Coates (transcr. Lou Singer) : Sleepy Lagoon 3.57 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 2961 exibições Eric Coates (1886-1957) was a well-known British composer of light music, whose orchestral suites (such as 'London', 'London Again', 'The Three Elizabeths') were enormously popular in the 1930s and 1940s, and are still regularly heard today. Most of his orchestral music was issued in piano solo versions, and there is a literal version of this piece. It achieved fame as the signature tune for the long-running BBC radio show 'Desert Island Discs'. This video is of a very free (and abridged) transcription by Louis ('Lou') C Singer (1913-66). Singer was a child prodigy pianist who later became an arranger for Duke Ellington in the 1930s and 1940s. He was also a percussionist, appearing on sessions in the 1950s with Peggy Lee, Harry Belafonte and others. In this and other commercial piano arrangements, aimed at a domestic market, Singer brings touches of the dance-band and musical theatre scoring of the period to much older songs - making fascinating period piece versions of earlier period pieces. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Played by Phillip Sear www.psear.co.uk. + Informações |

Eric Coates: Noonday Song (Romance) from 'Springtime' suite 4.12 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 1886 exibições Eric Coates (1886-1957) was a well-known British composer of light music, whose orchestral suites (such as 'London', 'London Again', 'The Three Elizabeths') were enormously popular in the 1930s and 1940s, and are still regularly heard today. Most of his orchestral music was issued in piano solo versions, and 'London' was apparently arranged by Coates himself. These piano versions have never made it into the piano repertoire - even though they were sold as suites for piano and not as 'arrangements'. I think this is because - either owing to Coates' orchestrations, or the arrangers' shortcomings - the arrangements of the uptempo items (often waltzes and marches) are very routine and unimaginative and more suited to the ballet school than the concert hall. However there are some exceptions, such as this attractive version of a movement from a 1937 suite, which I think lies very well on the piano. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Played by Phillip Sear www.psear.co.uk. + Informações |

Recorded. c.March 10th 1932. The second side of this concert arrangement of the popular light vocal song which found it's way in to the dance band repertoire around 1930. The words to the poem by Alfred Kilmer lend themselves so well to this lovely arrangement. Jack Payne takes a suitably restrained vocal refrain. Recorded in March 1932.
